The logic board thats inside the external casing may have gone bad usually due to overheating, even tho the entire device stays somewhat cool, that chip is transferring 150mt/s, you can try opening the device if your not worried about the warranty and hooking the drive up internally instead

You could download and install Seatools, free, from the Seagate website (Seagate incorporates Maxtor). You can run a check and possibly repair the disc if it is damaged. Seatools and can also automatically report on the manufacturer's 5 year warranty, and provides a reference to have it repaired under any guarantee which may remain.

Do I need only one cord (usb) to connect to my laptop?

The "physically-smaller" external hard-drives draw power through the USB cable.
The "physically-larger" external hard-drives require an external power-supply (just like a laptop requires an external power-supply).

Check the casing for a plug where the electrical power would come in; if none, then the unit will draw electrical power through the USB cable.

Maxtor harddisc wnat to format error

If any of you still have these monitors, and wish to sell them, i am interested in finding some to use as spare parts if i can’t get them working. send email to elah4@zoominternet.net.
I have two of these that i have already repaired successfully.
Or if you would like to have me repair for you.

there is software to retrieve data from hard drives that have lost the table of contents because of power failure during a wright session, which usually causes this to happen. get the software and learn how to use it before doing anything else to the drive, any formatting or weighting to the drive will cause less chance to retrieve your data from the drive.

i have successfully done this on several external drives of my own. and just tor the fun of it i did a reformat and then by the use of software retrieved the data again afterwards, much to my surprise
you will need a extra drive wit space for the retreved data during this process. then you can transfer data back to original drive to use again.

You could check that the backup software settings are pointing to the correct drive. (I've made this mistake before).

My maxtor 250gb ext drive cant be read

Hi

Sounds like the armature of the drive has prob got damaged or the platters destroyed. If the data is important then maybe look into taking it to a data recovery specialised before its too late.

Do not attempt to pull apart yourself as ideally a 'clean Room' is required along with some pretty expensive kit.

Thanks

Taz

Problem open up my maxtor one touch 500gb to retieve photos

first, recover your files. You will need to use hard drive deleted photo recovery program like Asoftech Photo Recovery, you can follow this video to recover deleted photo
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sNxApz_PBW8

I've had to use it many times in the past but in this case you need to plug that drive into another system as an external drive or slave drive and run the software from there. It will rebuild the drive and hopefully recover the files.

After you get back your files, you can then format the drive and reinstall your system.

Maxtor basics external drive

Hi Nuisance101, I recall your running vista. Vista is a nightmare. If you cound only see the troubles we see on a daily basis here at FixYa you'ed understand. It's a common problem with Vista not seeing USB devices, externial devices. It does & then the next second it doesn't. Same for all external devices. I'm am 100% sure the trouble is not your system or your devices. It's Vista. I have gone over dozens of post from vista users. One would think MS has been on vacation since the release of vista. You can look at vista's web site for help for a possible fix, at this link. (I have no faith). MS blames driver software. Your Maxtor drive is external. Henve no driver software.
So it falls into that vista area of one time vista see's the drive & the next it does not.
Either way I though Maxtor addressed vista issues. I prefer Seagate drives myself. Personally know lots of people who's Maxtor's drives have just gone down for no reason. Seagate bought Maxtor.

Most of the post from vista users, claim users should check vista's updates often. Since Max Blaster did its job, I'm inclined to blame vista.

I wish I could give you a better fix or suggestion but I'm up against vista. That's why I run WinXP Pro. I do not have these problems.

Best wishes Nuisance101!
Mike
