Beeps On Boot

Good Morning, I have a very old machine that I would like to keep running to show Windows 3.11 and a DOS based Autocad. Well, when it boots up, there is no screen and it beeps about 7 or 8 times. What could the problem be? It might even beep 9 times since it does it so rapidly. Please Help

Yes, I tried replacing the video card. That worked, but now I have three beeps, which I know is memory. I will try to reseat them, but trying to find sims is tough. Thank you.

  • bruce_fourma Dec 11, 2008

Yes, I remember that very well. It is just that I only have the two sets of 32. I would hate to see any of it going bad. Do you know of anyone that still sells sims?

  • bruce_fourma Dec 11, 2008

LOL No worries. Yes, I have been around for a while, but couldn't remember what the 7 beeps meant. It has been a while. This machine is older than my oldest daughter, so I would like to keep it running. Granted, I know one of these days, I will have to give up the ghost, but I am not ready as of yet.

Sounds like it could either be a video card error or the bios rom chip is faulty, first try to rplace the video card, if you still have the error, replacec the cmos battery or at the least take it off the mother board and leave the computer unplugged for about 10 minutes, then replace and start again, failing that the motherboard might be faulty which would have to be replaced.

also try different memory chips, although the code you describe doesn't pertain to ram error it may be the cause

No problem, just remember to always insert sims in pairs, try removing one pair that are in to check which ones are not working, be methodical you might find you can run your system after removing some of them

Boot manager is missing HP pavilion dv6 notebook windows 7

This sounds like a common issue. The boot manager file "NTLDR" Can become corrupt or go missing due to a few situations.
1) Shut down improperly
2) Virus
3) Bad hard disk
4) Windows being windows.
Too fix this simply use a windows 7 cd and boot from it.
Choose the Repair option and let it do its thing. If i recall there's also a repair startup option you can use aswell.
Windows repair usually fixes the problem but if that doesnt work you can also put the hard disk into another computer and copy over replacement boot loader files.
""
  • ntldr, the main boot loader itself
  • NTDETECT.COM, required for booting an NT-based OS, detects basic hardware information needed for successful boot
  • ""
Try that. The windows repair usually works but if you have to use the alternative and it doesnt work it could be your MBR. Windows repair also fixes this but theres an old command you can run from the dos shell of the cdrom "mbrfix or fixmbr" That will take care of it.
    Good Luck :)

Biostar TA790GXE 125M keeps shuting down when I boot windows, on SATA and IDE hard drives

    Run the Check Disk Utility.

To run the check disk utility you will need a repair disc or a operating system disc. Put the disc in the cd drive and boot from it. You want to get to the Dos Command Prompt (Black screen with white letters) and type the following command: chkdsk /r
Check disk will run well over an hour or two and you will notice the percentages going from high to low, this is normal. Let it run to completion. Then reboot machine.

If check disk fails to solve your problem you might have to reinstall windows. Try doing a Repair Install that way you don't loose your data, documents, music, pictures, videos or programs.

In windows xp you get to the dos command prompt by selecting R for repair when the options appear.

In Vista and Windows 7 you want to get to the recovery console and look down at the bottom of the window for the Dos Command.

CMOS battery replaced in laptop and it boot loops everytime showing OS option screen and safe-mode options no repair option shows

You changed the CMOS Battery, did you go into the BIOS and set the correct Date and Time? If that fails try running the check disk utility because it sounds like your boot files or systems files are either missing something or has some corruption.

I FORGET MY IBM THINKPAD LENOVO T60 BIOS PASSWORD, NOW HOW I ENTER IN BIOS. PLZ GUIDE ME. S.VIRANI

    Hi

Remove to your BIOS password download the CmosPwd, and follow the mention below instruction.
Typical Usage for DOS and all Windows users:

    1) Identify your BIOS manufacturer (usually displayed at boot-up)

    2) Start in DOS, or start a DOS session in Windows 95/98/ME. For Windows NT or Windows 2000 boot from a DOS or Windows 95/98 boot disk (you can find boot disks at www.AnswersThatWork.com), and run CMOSPWD from your boot floppy (or another floppy).

    3) C: [Enter] cd CMOSPWD [Enter]

    4) Type CMOSPWD at the DOS prompt and press Enter.

    5) CMOSPWD will display a list of possibilities. Use the possibilities itemised against your BIOS manufacturer. Remember :

    a) For AWARD BIOSes, use the Numeric Keypad (with NumLock ON).
    b) AWARD 4.50PG BIOS always accepts "AWARD_SW", or "d8on", or "589589".
    c) Old Phoenix BIOSes will accept "phoenix".

    6) If the standard method does not work, then try to kill the CMOS password with CMOSPWD /K (and press Enter), and then see if you can get into the CMOS without a password. If you can, you successfully "killed" the old CMOS password. DO NOT KILL THE CMOS ON LAPTOPS!

    Hey stanley154

try to boot your machine using window 98 startup disk or window 98 bootable CD. then type fdisk on DOS prompt. Then try to delete non dos partation and the create primary dos partation. Restart your machine, let it start window or the floppy until it return to dos prompt. Then you can type the format c: e.g a:\format c: or D:\format c:. After that try to run window xp.

Replace the hard drive with a new one. IT takes a standard IDE 2.6" laptop drive - I would try newegg.com they have pretty good prices probably about $100 for a 120gb drive.

The hard drive is under the 3x4" cover on the bottomn of the machine.
