Using a HDD Caddy!

The screen on my laptop is no longer working and a friend advised me to purchase a HDD Caddy and transfer all my documents, pictures and music. The problem is i've never done anything like this in my life before and don't even know where to start....!!!!!!!

Please help me. I don't have a lot of money to spend on this, so don't really want to hand it in to a repair shop.

Hi John!

I asume that you have that caddy, and its connected by USB?

Well, since your screen is black on your laptop you need to connect another screen by the VGA port on your laptop. Now start up your laptop, hopfully the graphics on yout motherboard is working and the screen lights up.
Now connect the caddy in a usb-port, windows will now find it and install it since its connected to an usb-port.

When the caddy is anstalled you can use it, you will find it under "My Computer"

Now you are redy to move all the files you want.
Select the file you want to move, COPY them, DO NOT cut them, if you cut them and something goes wrong you can loose them, by copy them they still are on your laptop. Copy the files, go to your HDD Caddy, open it, and paste the files. The files will now be copyed from your laptop to your HDD Caddy.

Good luck to you

If you require just your data, as it seems the system has crashed, purchase a usb hdd caddy. Remove the hdd from the old laptop, fit it to the usb caddy and copy your data to another pc.
Win2000 is totally unsupported now.

It could be that your Hard Drive is almost gone, or, that the system file is corrupt (but you would get a system error with this, pls advise if you do). In the case that your HDD is dying, I would recommend that you try and backup all your data asap to an external USB Hard Drive.

If you do happen to have another working computer around you can try this, but first you need the following:
1 external USB Hard Drive case that matches your PC Hard Drive fitting, ie. IDE or SATA.
2. A Windows XP cd with serial key.

If you do, then carefully disconnect all power to the problem PC, and carefully remove the Hard Drive.

Open your external USB drive case, and carefully remove the HDD, be careful not to drop any of the HDD - treat it with care.
Now insert the problem HDD into the fitting/connection that is either IDE or SATA, matching your case's fitting.
Close the case, dont have to insert the screws at this point, and hook it up to your spare working pc.
It should pick up on the screen as an external USB drive.
First, scan it for any viruses and clean it if any picks up.
Now locate all your data from Documents and Settings/Username/Desktop and My Documents and Favourites too.
Copy these files to your spare PC's Desktop with a New folder created and labeled.
After you transfered all your data, then disconnect from working PC, remove case of external usb drive, remove the HDD of the problem PC and insert it back into the PC body.

Insert the WinXP cd into the CD ROM drive and wait for it to boot from CD, then attempt a repair. Else, reinstall XP and follow the instructions on the screen - they're user friendly, and dont be scared:)

Hi I got a Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop. The current HHD is the seagate momentus 5400.3 120g. This is now damaged. Can I use the Seagate Momentus 5400.6, 320 G, 5400 RPM SATA2. Will my laptop support the 320g...

Hello: I see no problem using a bigger harddrive in the unit, the only concern I think you might have is to purchase a hard drive caddy for the interface, Especially if the current hard drive is an IDE Interface, You can purchase a IDE to Sata Interface caddy, to support the drive Interface if it's an IDE format. You might want to check with Dell for compatibility first before purchasing the Sata Drive.

try plugging a standard pc keyboard into the ps2 slot ,if it has one, if not use a usb keyboard. That should tell you if the keyboard is malfunctioning. As for using the hard drive with no caddy it should be fine as long as you pad it it securely, to stop it being knocked about etc when moving the laptop. Also you will need to enter the bios and set ideo 0(the hard drive) to auto detect. As it is more than likely detecting the old hard drive in the bios settings not the new one?

When i try to restore my toshiba sattlite with factory recovery disc it shows a error message at the end. 10-fc10-0017

Hi friend,

I think the problem is with the HDD possibly some corrupt partitions.
So it would be advisable and recommend to format the HDD.
Usually this should be done using the Toshiba Recovery DVD but try to format the HDD using an original Windows XP CD.

After HDD was formatted try to start again using the Toshiba Recovery DVD. Note: If it does not work then this is time to change your hard disc :( ... but no other way.. idunno..

When you insert the usb cable from the caddy into a USB port on your notebook, Vista will automatically recognize it and open a dialog box. Choose to view files and folders.

Open another Window using Explorer and resize it so you can see the contents of your C: drive.

Then simply drag your files and folders from the caddy to the C: drive where you want them.

Remember that transferring program files will NOT help you as many of the files needed to run a program are located in other folders such as yours Windows directory. You will need to reinstall any software you wish to use.

This method is strictly for data transfer, as an example all your pictures, documents, spreadsheets, etc.

Acer harddrive working also in other Acer notebooks?

You can physically install the drive in any laptop with the same type. They will either be SATA or IDE. However unless you have a nearly identical system which is unlikely after a few months of buying it the windows installation is not likely to work.

The better solution would be to stop in at your local computer store and purchase a 2.5" drive caddy and install the HDD into the caddy. That caddy will then work as an external HDD on any computer you purchase allowing you not only to access the files on it but also to backup any new data.
