If the os is not working, use the recovery disks that you got with your system to do a repair install, boot into windows setup and when the first menu comes up (install repair or quit) choose repair (press r) and run through the install process, this will leave your data intact but will reset the whole operating system, you will have apply your updates again but your machine will work
