The hard drive is almost dying. Did you try unplug and plug the power supply? Also, try restarting your pc and the hard drive might fix it. Do a hard boot on the hard drive by unplugging it on the pc and power and hold the power button for like 10-20 seconds(This will do a warm boot on the hard drive.) and then plug the hard drive back to its original place.

First, I hope you backed up anything that was on it that was of impotance.
If not there are ways of retrieving your data. Some can be costly and others time consuming, so if the data isn't important the quick fix is to empty it out and use it as a hidden safe for money and buy a new one. Hard drives are cheaper to buy new ones rather than repairing.

If the data is important and you are a little computer savy with programs.
My simple solution to you is to buy a program that can rebuild the catalog file on your hard drive. There are several dignositc programs that can test your drive and discover if this is corrupted or not, which is what it sounds like. (If it was dropped, don't wast your money on this, it is likely that the needle that writes information to your disc head had gouged the disc and is beyond repair.)
There are also people like myself that are paid a lot of money to take your platter out of your current Case and place it in a working one to retrieve that information. This isn't cheap and should be used as a last resort. Please let me know if this helps.

Has this been dropped, knocked over, or anything of that nature. If that is the case, and you are still within warrenty (WDs have between 1 and 5 years on their externals) then you might want to contact them about getting a replacement. Now, what you should try in the mean time is test the hard drive on another USB port. Occasionally, after excessive use, a USB port can become a bit loose, Try using another USB port, or even another USB cable. Hope you haven't lost any important data.

GO TO CONTROL PANEL, CLICK ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS, CLICK COMPUTER MANAGEMENT, UNDER STORAGE, CLICK DISK MANAGEMENT. WAIT A FEW SECONDS, THEN ENLARGE THE PAGE. LOOK FOR YOUR DRIVE. SEE IF IT SAYS UNALLOCATED SPACE. IF IT DOES NOT, RIGHT CLICK THE DRIVE, AND SEE IF YOU GET THE OPTION TO MARK PARTITION AS ACTIVE. IF NOT GOT TO DEVICE MANAGER, WHICH IS ABOVE STORAGE, CLICK ON IT, LOOK FOR ANY TREE THAT IS OPENED. IF ANY ARE OPENED SUCH AS DISK DRIVES OR AT THE BOTTOM "UNIVERSAL SERIAL BUS CONTROLLERS" DOUBLE CLICK TO OPEN UP. WHAT YOU WANT TO DO IS, EITHER UPDATE DRIVER, OR UNINSTALL DRIVER AND DO A REBOOT. External HDD no longer recognized by new win7 PC

Probably not the right answer for your problem. Mine is an external 1 TB Simple Drive. Mine wouldn't respond at all. I unplugged the power cable from the back of the hard drive and replugged it in and instantly it worked. I had tried rebooting the computer, plugging/unplugging over and over into the computer and that didn't work.

PC won't recognize flashing Western Digital External Hard Drive

First, I recommend changing the USB cable. Try it on another computer to see if it works. If that does not work the next part is more complicated. You may not want to do it.

Open the box and remove the hard drive. Open your turned off computer and attach the data and power cables and support the drive next to the computer with no stress on the cables. Turn the computer on and see if you now have a new drive.

Problem: there are two kinds of drives: IDE and SATA. IDE has a wide 40 wire data cable and big flat 4 connector power cable. SATA has a small (usually RED color) data cable and a small power connector. There is now way anyone could confuse the two types.

If your computer and external drive match you can check the external this way. If the are opposite, you are snookered. Beyond these suggestions, there is not much more I can do.
