Question about Maytag MMV5000 Microwave Oven

1 Answer

MMV5000 cavity light off when is pressed...

When the start button is pressed, the cavity light does not turn on, but turn table goes and food cooks. There is also a lot of noise from lower back right, facing microwave. The cooking process does not sound normal. When door is open, the cavity light turns on though. Any help with home repairs? I can swap parts pretty easily, just need to know which ones to swap. Thanks, Victor.

Is cavity light = light inside oven? I might have gotten confused with the descriptoin with the light under the microwave oven above the stove top.

The noise sounds like light grinding or magnetic gears not turning. I'm more inclined to say it's like when turning over a car engine and there's not enough juice in the battery, sort of.

Oh, the microwave works sporatically too. I just tried it again and the inside light works and the process is normal.

What could be failing? The primary/secondary switches? I removed the handle catch and checked/opened the top switch and the contanct had burning on it. I scraped off the black with a flat head screw driver and replaced it. Oven did not function immediately, but after sitting plugged in for about an hour, it works okay now, but who knows for how much longer though.

    Thanks for your quick responses.
    Victor.

The wiring diagram indicates that there is a cavity lamp switch on this model. It should be under the control panel or somewhere else on the underside of the oven. The noise you describe could indicate trouble with the fan or the magnetron, etc. If you could describe it in more detail we may be able to offer more advice.

How to change nightlight bulb on ge advantium 120 oven

Advantium - Interior Light Operation While Microwaving

The Advantium 240 oven interior (cavity) light will illuminate anytime the door is open. However, due to the dark tint on the oven door, there is not a light on while cooking since the food would not be visible using the interior lamp.
Food may be viewed during a microwave cycle by pressing the Microwave/Oven Light pad.

One of the Upper Level Speedcook lamps will come on for 5 seconds. The Microwave/Oven Light pad can be pressed up to 5 times during a microwave cooking cycle. The limit of 5 times is to prevent excessive heat on microwave cookware from the Speedcook lamp.

The Advantium 120 oven cavity is illuminated anytime the door is opened and while the unit is in the microwave only mode. As a result it will not have the Microwave/Oven Light pad.

When I press the start the button the turn table inside microwave is not turning and there is not heat on the food. But the light is on and the clock is working. What do you think is the problem? and what...

The turn table motor of your microwave is defective already and also the magnetron - the source of generated heat of the microwave is also defective. But before assuming that magnetron is dead, check the high voltage fuse it may be blown and replace the fuse (if it is blown) it with similar rating. I hope I help you with your microwave problem.

There was a bright light from inside the oven. The fan still goes around providing the grill switch is on and the oven grill and top and bottom element still work.

Carbonised food build up or a metalic object was in the cavity as it was being used, causing internal arcing inside the food cavity. You may find the cover over the magnetron aerial is blackened. If it is change it.
Clean the oven cavity and check for damage.
Hope that helps.

I have an MMV5000,the microwave will cook food but the fan will no come on, the turntable will not rotate, and the counter light will stay on but very dim

Have your cooktop lights been replaced lately?

It is vital that the cooling fan runs, or the magnetron will be destroyed.

We see (and repair) this a lot. The problem is on the control panel, which we regularly repair nationwide by mail for $39.95 postpaid in about a week or so.

At our Web site, you can get details of our service, plus we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

This light failure often occurs when a bulb goes out and the filament shorts, or when the bulbs are removed or installed without first unplugging the oven from the power line. Either can cause such a failure on the controller.

The lights can can be inoperable or stuck on or stuck in "night light" mode. Sometimes this will similarly affect the fan operation or inside light, too.

Feel free to contact me directly (and please remind me of your full model number from the tag on the unit) for more information & help.

We're happy to help you with free advice and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

Leaving microwave on pause

Unless the control electronics fail, leaving the oven paused won't hurt anything but it will enable someone unfamiliar with to restart it with nothing in the cavity and this can damage the magnetron. Unless you are just checking the food for progress, I wouldn't recommend leaving it paused and 'armed.'

Maytag MMV5000 stopped working

If it's intermittent or random, it may be a bad connection, usually on the control board or a loose fuse holder, or even an intermittent fuse.

If the fuse is good, it may be an open thermostat or thermal cutout on or near the magnetron or on top of the cavity / body of the oven.

If it goes dead for a while during or after cooking then comes back on, the magnetron is probably overheating and causing the magnetron thermostat to open. Then when it cools, it closes the circuit and allows power through again.

If you or someone you know decide to look into it, we have critical safety information and disassembly information at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk

There should also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel, which is very helpful when troubleshooting.

We're happy to help and we appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

Non-working parts

I would pop the back of the microwave cover off and check the fuses with a tester make sure that they are not blown. A lot of the time the connections will fry up as well. I have repaired a few microwaves in my time and usually something like that is a very simple fix.
