Question about Refrigerators

My compressor is still running but only blowing cool not cold

I can hear the compressor still running but food in freezer melting and in frig. not as cold as it should be. I also hear a clicking noise behind the unit. We took the back off the unit to see if the condenser was dirty but looked ok and the fan was working. Is my compressor going bad?

what could the clicking noise be, one click then a few seconds later another click. would fixing the refrigerent leak be expensive? the frigidaire unit is 5years and a few months, right outside of the warranty. I know the compressor would be very expensive if it is bad. Thanks!!!!!

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Offhand, what would seem to be the problem is that there is a refrigerant leak hence even if the compressor is running, there is no refrigerant being compressed and flows through the system to cool things down.

Most compressors could be checked with a clamp ammeter to determine their starting and running current which would indicate if they are in need of replacement or not.

Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa. Happy Holidays.

The clicking sound is produced by a relay/solenoid that engages the compressor.

You are quite correct, repair involving the compressor would no longer be economically reasonable. The only way to check the compressor is as earlier stated, a clamp ammeter.

Re-charging should be not that expensive as the refrigerant is relatively cheap. It is the service charge that is rather costly depending where you are located.

Whirlpool refrigerator model ED5FTGHKQ02

the closest model i could find was ED5FTGXKQ02 instead of ED5FTGHKQ02,could you check that and also what's not cooling both sides or just the fridge section, all it does is the evap coil gets cold in the freezer and the evap fan blows cold air from the freezer over to the fridge section, couple of the ings to check is open the freezer door, you should hear the fan blowing,if not you have a bad evap fan motor,if it is blowing from the bottom up remove the second bin or draw full of food and touch the back inside wall of freezer,if there's frost or like ice on the back panel you have a defrost problem,if everything is melting in both sides the compressor isn't running, could be a bad timer located in the fresh food section up front where the controls are or a bad start device located on the side of compressor, you might hear a clicking sound every couple of minutes.let me know what you find and check the model number, open the fridge door, look up on the right side wall near the ceiling or down near the bottom hinge on the door.thanks

Maytag freezer don't freeze food or make ice

There could be several things causing the frig to be cold but not cold enough. First check thermostat control and air control. Both should be set in the middle setting for normal operation.Next check to see if evaporater fan is running in freezer. It should be running whenever compressor runs and circulates cold air inside frig as well as freezer. Next check if condensor fan motor is running. It blows air over condensor coils to remove heat. Last ,check condensor itself for dirty coils. If they are matted up with hair dust, etc. it will cause poor cooling. you can give thorough cleaning with vacuum cleaner. Hope this helps

Refrigerator is blowing air but no longer cold.

It is possible that if the compressor is running that it is either low on freon and not cooling or in some instances low on freon and evaporator is froze up - in which case frig will cool again once all the ice has melted on your floor,) Or maybe your compressor is not running - in which case its cheaper to get a new frig for sure. Listen to tell if the compressor is running. If it is, then your frig probably is low on freon. (I don't know if yours is new enough for a timer) Hope this helps you, Rick

Fan running,both cold settings at 4 , freezer 14 degrees C

you need to replace the start components on the compressor, theres a relay that mounts on to the compressor that takes out the start winding after it starts the compressor up. You can also try whats called a three in one to try to start up the unit. Good Luck.

GE Profile Stainless Steel Top Freezer Refrigerator

Check the compressor.
Unplug for 15-20 min. plug it back in and listen for the compressor to start. You will have to be behind the ref to listen and make sure you hear the compressor start and not just a fan running. If you hear a clicking noise then the compressor relay is bad.
