How do I format a dvd disc

You don't have to. DVD's and CD's are already formatted from factory. But if you are having problems to record on (burn) them probably your computer is not capable for DVD burn, just CD's. But if it is equipped for burning then try this:
See alsoFormat a CD or DVD

Before you can copy files to a CD or DVD, the disc must first be prepared using a process called formatting. There are several ways to format a CD or DVD disc. Your choice of format determines which computers and other devices will be able to read the disc.

  1. Insert a disc into your computer's CD or DVD drive.

  2. In the dialog box that appears, click Burn files to disc.

  3. In the Burn a disc dialog box, type a name for your new disc.

  4. Click Show formatting options, and then click one of the following formatting options:

    • Live File System

    • Mastered

  5. Click Next to prepare the disc.

Now you can copy files to your disc using whichever method you selected.

I CAN NOT TRANSFER FROM THE CAM TO COMPUTER I HAVE WINDOWS XP PROFESSIONAL AND MY COMPUTER SAYS THAT THE FORMAT ON DVD IS NOT SUPPORTED

Hi,

There are three ways of transferring the videos from the Camcorder to the Computer. One is by using the Picture Motion Browser Software, other by using the A/V, USB cable after finalizing the disc in the Camcorder and finally using the DVD-ROM Drive in the Computer after finalizing the disc. If you're trying to transfer using the 2nd and 3rd option, the the disc in the Camcorder should be finalized.

Also make sure that the disc is formatted in DVD-Video mode instead of DVD-VR mode. VR mode recorded discs can only be played back using a VR Compatible Software/Player or in the same Camcorder. DVD-Video mode recording will help you in playing the discs in all the Players and DVD Viewing Software.

I always recommend transferring the videos to the Computer using the supplied PMB Software.

Please check transferring steps and information from the link given below:

Boot Disc's Not reading, Dvd rom help? or Xp/vista help?

How did you made it boot to the disc? if you used keystrokes to do so, it would be better if you go into your BIOS and set the boot priority making the dvd drive as priority and see if it is gonna work that way. If it does'nt you need to be concerned about the drive itself, it might be having problems as well.

I can not be abel to read writed CD

These discs that are written on other systems, were they finalized or are they multi-sessions discs that have been left open? Some drives have difficulty dealing with multi-session discs created by other drives. By telling it it is OK to format the CD, it is writing a new TOC (Table of Contents) that is blank since it did not see anything on the disc previously (so it didn't know there was anything to carry over from previous sessions). Now all other drives that try to read this disc are now reading an empty TOC and figure it is a blank CD.

You can try writing a disc on another computer and making sure it finalizes it, then try reading it with your laptop. You can also try to burn data to a CD on your laptop making sure the disc is finalized and try to read it on another computer to verify these suspicions.

Can't read dvd ram disk

Well not all DVD Rom's are compatible for DVD Ram. Other problem would be the formatting. Windows XP Home and Professional can only write directly to FAT32-formatted DVD-RAM discs. For UDF-formatted discs, which are considered faster, compatible device drivers or software such as InCD or DLA are required. Windows Vista can natively access and write to both FAT32 and UDF-formatted DVD-RAM discs, however Windows Vista uses its own version of the UDF format giving compatibility problems. Vista also has issues with XP formatted FAT32 discs as Vista uses the CPRM features. Even though it is possible to use any file system one likes, only very few perform well on DVD-RAM. This is because some file systems frequently over-write data on the disc and the table of contents is contained at the start of the disc.

Loading some DVD's

I have seen this same thing on a laptop. DVD drives use two lasers. One for CD and one for DVD. As you noted CDs are just fine and so is that laser. Although I believe the DVD laser is intermittent. And it will work with some DVDs and not others. Yes I have seen this before. What will probably happen a few months down the road is it will stop reading all DVDs.

It isn't economical to replace the failing laser. It is far cheaper to just replace the whole DVD drive. Lasers are like light bulbs. Some seem to last forever and some seems to burn out right away. Generic DVD replacements will generally work, although the face plate might not fit.

Another option is to get an external DVD that plugs into the USB port. And those Slimline models are really small (same size as laptop CD/DVD drives) and you can use them on other computers too.

First of all I'm running Vista HP SP1. I put a disc (CD or DVD)in either of my LG CD/DVD 20x drives and try to view the disc by clicking on "My Computer" and then the "drive" that...

This could be several things, most likey it's a compat issue with Vista being daffy. Check with the mfg of the drive, see if there are updates for vista or if they should be running on vista. Check with microsoft, see if there are patches for the drive. Also it could just be the drive not master/slaved properly or it could be having mechanical issues.

Handycam disc

unstalled the programme and re-installed it, the boys who were trying to install it didn't re-start the computer and also they were trying to read the disc using the dvd drive, instead they should have put the dvd in thedvd reader draw and then selected E to give them the handycam drive which then worked perfectly. It didn't ask for the disc to be finalized either.
