Ibook has gone nuts

First off here is the deal, I've had my 3g apple ibook for 5 years, I bought it off a friend, Like I said I've had it 5 years, it is a little older than that, however, when I 1st got it, it was running on OS9, I have to admit I had no dealings with macintosh and had only ever used windows. As I was initially using the ibook I kept recieving msgs about not being able to use certain software with OS9 and would need to upgrade to OSX, 2 cut a long story short somewhat, I managed to get OSX and went to put it on the ibook, I was asked did I want 2 delete some stuff off the main drive to make way for OSX, not being familiar with OS9 I pressed yes, much 2 my confusion as the whole ibook wiped, not 2 work again for another 5 years. so present day, Began fumbling about with the ibook, and to my suprise began to make some success with it, as it happened, I had all the relevant discs and managed to reinstall OS9 back on to the drive, so the ibook looked basic I even managed to get it online, via ethenet broadband at a friends house, did some software updates and that was that, so began 2 weeks of absolute hell, I've not been able to get the sod online at my own home, again via ethernet broadband and have currently reinstalled OS9, OS9.2, OS9.2.2 and OSX something like 20 times. Finally, I managed to get all mof it reinstalled, and eventually OSX on the ibook, but still I can't get it online, I've trolled all over the net and can't think of anything that might help, I've followed most possible silutions.

PLease Help me, if I can give you any other info I will

- actually, it's not an ibook clamshell, it's the white ibook notebook type

- HI Sean, thanks for replying, to be honest, I'm not totally sure what verson of OSX I have, I assumed until recently that there was only one type, actually, I also have to admit the OSX I have was a friends, so it never came with any documentation. I am wondering whether I've altered something to some settings as regard to the TCP/IP area, but like I mentioned in my initial request, when I finally managed to reinstall the OS9.1 disc on to the ibook I was at a friends and managed to get the ibook online, I did the software update button in the drop down, directly after that I tried to install OSX, it started gonig odd then, You know, like the upgrade initially didn't go all the way through it's install or as it appeared, but like I've said, I've re-installed, installed, re-installed OS9.1, 9.2, 9.2.2 and OSX what must be 50 times over the past 2-3 weeks. I've surfed the net looking for any answers I can find, a one step forward 3 steps back scenario. I've tried to download straight from the apple site then transfer on to the ibook, so, to answer your reply as far as I am aware I am now using version 10.0 .

To be honest, from what I've just typed out there I'm not sure I'm of any use what so ever, I'm ot a total dill, but I guess I've just used and gotten used to having to deal with windows for so long, granted, I am slowly learnig some small tips to using and getting to know macs and I actually see why people prefer them to windows, it's a shaem they are both screwing us over.

Well, I've babbled enough, if you can make sense of what I've said you are a king amongst kings, lol

Thanks Sean.

What version of OS X are you running Jaguar Panther or Tiger? How are you trying to connect to the internet? Through a router or directly connected to the DSL/Cable modem? There are some things that you need to look at to get the information you need in the System Preferences Network tab.

First look to see if it says you are connected via Ethernet and what colour the "light" is (green yellow or red). If it is green you are connected and have an IP address, yellow connected but there is an issue with the IP address and or connection and red means that the ethernet does not show any connection to the network.

Depending on what that shows, look at the interface tab (may have to select advanced) and see that the ETH0 is present and selected and that it is first on the list.
You then go to the TCPIP tab and check that it is set for DHCP or automatic configuration.. If it is then try to renew the DHCP lease. If it is set for anything other than that, change it apply and try again.

I had a G3 iBook that was probably about the same age and specs, and I noticed it really only started working well after I put Tiger 10.4 on it. 10.2 was not great and of course with 9.x it would not run new stuff.

Feel free to ask for more help if you need it. I have A LOT of experience with the machine you have running different versions of OS X.
