Aussie_jay09,

If your printer is brand new, just out of the box, than repack the printer back in the box and march it right back to where you purchased it from. Your printer is classed under manufacturer criteria as DOA, which means dead on arrival. It is nothing you are doing, the printer is simply faulty and needs to be returned to your supplier for exchange. It happens sometimes and I am sorry you are on the receiving end.

To be more technical about it, from what you are saying it sounds as though you have a faulty print mechinism. This is the central core part of the printer and I have seen this issue on many occasions.

Carrier jam

The carrier Jam message refers to your ink cartridge housing, belt and primer buckets. The problem is usually either paper stuck in the belt, or a sticky head primer. The print heads eventually get stuck to the rubber primer stoppers to the right or left of your printers hidden area.

Open the door to your printer the same as you would when replacing your Ink Cartridges. The printer ink carriage should immediately slide over to the middle. If it doesn't, you just found your problem. This also applies if the heads try to move to the center and fail. You will have to work them loose from the primer and slide the heads over to get to the primers. Clean those with windex or something non petroleum based. Alcohol will soften and weaken the primers rubber heads, so avoid using it.

The final cause will be a dry guide rod.
This is usually very shiny and chrome plated, and can be cleaned easily. Use alcohol on the rod, then lubricate with Vaseline, applying a very thin even layer.

In rare cases your belt could be broken, but this is very unlikely.
If it is, you won't need help finding it. The end will be dangling and obvious when you open the top.

b. open the front cover.
c. Using a dry, lint free cloth, pinch the encoder strip on the right-hand side of the cartridge carriage and pull your fingers across it toward the right-hand side of the printer and you can move the cartridges carriage to clean the strip completely.
d. Note: The encoder strip is a narrow band of clear plastic and can be difficult to see without direct lighting running parallel to metallic rod.
e. Close the printer and try again to print.

4. Repositioning the Encoder strip.

Ensure the Paper Tray is Not Overfilled
Each printer tray has a maximum capacity rating, and this rating is based on a specific paper weight and or thickness. Consequently, situations might arise in which the tray will not be able to accommodate the maximum number of sheets listed in the printer specifications. Verify that the paper is not packed too tightly in the paper tray.

Reseat the Dell Printer Power Adapter.
If your printer has a momentary loss of communication with your computer, it may be necessary to reset the printer to re-establish communication. You can reset a printer by unplugging the printer power cord from the electrical outlet and from the back of the printer for 10 seconds then reattaching the cord at both ends.

Check with manufacturer if printer is still covered under warranty...

Dell 942 carrier jam

This morning I replaced the cartridges in the Dell 942 printer, they jammed to the left which made a loud grinding noise and the cartridge jam error came on.

I solved the problem by turning the printer on with the top up which moved the cartridges to the right a little so I could reach back, push one down a little manually which freed them to move over to the middle.

Ink cartridge carrier jam

Once it jams on the left turn off the machine. usually my lights are all red at that point, one is blinking the other two are solid red. open the cover. shine a flashlight in there, you will see a clear or light grey plastic ribbon that runs from the left to the right. it is the top most thing. Very carefully, clean it with a paper towel and a little water. or a kleenex. it should be almost clear.
after done, move the cartridge head to the right without turning on the printer. once again, clean the clear plastic ribbon where the cartridge head was located. finally turn on the printer, when it stops initializing, click the paper feed button, if you were successful, you won't see it jam into the left side.
if not, try repeating again. I think the optical head could also have some junk on it, and will deposit it back on the clear grey plastic strip.

the clear strip passes through the cartridge head. I'm told it is called an encoder strip and the optical head reads the strip to know it's position.

when that strip is dirty or covered with some ink spots, the print/cartridge head, can't read it and slams into the side the the printer.

this happened to my c80 at least 3 times now in seven years.

Carrier jam on dell 924 printer??

I was able to fix this issue on my all-in-one 944 printer. What happened was that one of the ink cartridge lids had popped open. The hard part was that the carrier was stuck on the far left side, and I wasn't able to pull it over for easer access. However, I was able to fit a finger in and push the cartridge back down. Then when I turned the printer back on the error went away.

Hope this helps
