We have a kitchenaid ykerc607hs7 and neither of the bake or broil elements work. would this be the inline fuse that comes off the main line or a problem with the thermostat? How can you get at the fuse without destroying the whole thing (it's shrink wrapped) or do you need to cut the cover, test/replace the fuse then electrical tape it back up? where is the thermostat on these things? is there a wiring schematic somewhere?

Hello. I looked carefully at the service manual for your unit--surprisingly, there is no thermal switch inline with the bake/broil elements. Usually, if the bake or broil elements pop, this blows out the thermal switch, killing power to the elements for safety. The main control board can get damaged due to the high current draw during a short-circuit. The part number for the main board is WB27T10008. The overlay(the decorative sticker with the button/names on it) numbers are as follows: almond WB27T10022, black WB27T10023, and white WB27T10021. I hope this helps you!
You're actually referring to the "broiler" elements. Most electric ovens have these at the top of the main oven space. (Some gas ovens are set up the same way, but many put the broiler elements in a bottom drawer.)
As their name implies, broiler elements are active only when you're broiling. They will not go on for baking.
Broiling is the process of cooking food by exposing it directly to a high heat source at close range. To broil a steak, for example, you would place the pan holding the steak on an oven rack raised to the top or next to top position in the oven (consult the manual) and set the oven to broil. The top elements will then turn on and cook the meat by direct radiation.
Most people, however, use ovens for baking far more often than for broiling. Baking is the process of cooking food (cakes, casseroles, roasts etc) by indirect heat. In other words you raise the oven to a certain temperature, put the food on a rack more in the middle of the oven, and let the surrounding heat cook it over time. When you bake the top broiler elements usually don't come on at all.
You say you checked the thermal fuse but did you check the broil element for continuity. Most ovens use the broil element for the clean function. The thermal fuse will shut off both the bake and the broil element.
Hello - - If you are referring to the bake element, but the broil element works then you would need to just replace the bake element. If both your bake and broil element does not work, then there might be a problem with the wiring communication. However, if the oven does not bake and/or broil but the cook top works; contact a professional to diagnose the EOC (electronic oven control).
Most likely the problem is your bake element. When the oven is preheating it uses both the bake and the broil element. When it's done preheating it uses only the bake element, so the broil element is heating it up, and since the bake element is not working the temperature drops until it starts preheating again.
Many bake element power wires have an inline fuse wrapped in tape. If you can locate a bulge in the wire between the element and the control it is probably an inline fuse. You wil have to probably cut open the wrapping to gain access to the fuse. This may not be the solution for your unit but take a look for the bulge.
to ask another question does the broil work but not bake or are they both not working? have you done a self clean in some models after you have done a self clean there is a fuse at the back of the oven that pops causeing both bake and broil not to work. So it is possible for the control board to be bad usually there are 2 relays on the board one for bake and one for broil when you look at the board... usualy there are 2 red wires going to the relay and the relay is marked bake/broil. check straight across with a volt meter and see if you have voltage after you have selected bake. if you have voltage there you have a bad board if you have no voltage there that means that the realy is closeing and sending voltage to your heaters but before it gets to your heaters it goes to a thermal fuse. you can also check straight at your element and see if you have 240v if you do you have a bad heater. i hopes this helps if you have any other questions pls let me know
I have a 2yo Kitchenaid oven, and my advice is first, don't use convection for cakes or pizza. Use the thermal oven. For pizza preheat to 500 degrees, then put the pizza on the lowest rack, and bake for 7-8 minutes.This way the bottom browns, and the top doesn't get broiled from the top element coming on during the bake cycle.
As for cakes, again place them on the low rack so that they get bottom heat. I keep my eye on the oven and when the broil element comes on I stick a piece of foil over the cake until it goes off. Otherwise it will set the top and the cake won't rise as much. Even doing that cakes don't rise as much as they did in my old oven, and they brown too much on top.
The convection oven does a good job of cookies, and the broil mode is okay.
I wish I hadn't bought this oven, but I didn't know about the upper (broil) element coming on during the bake cycle until I'd had it for awhile, and it was too late to return it.
If anyone's shopping for an oven, ask questions, and don't get one that maintains the oven temperature by activating the broil element when baking.
Good chance your bake element is out. Could be the element or a terminal burned off. When you set to bake, normally it preheats which uses the bake and broil element. When it reaches "near" temp, the broil goes off and the bake takes over. If the bake element, (the one in the bottom), is not working, the temp will decline.
Check: Turn to 450 deg. Watch the elements, assuming you have a door with a glass, and see if both elements, top and bottom, glow red.
Shaffy, When baking only the bake element should heat. When broiling only the broil element (upper) should heat. Your oven is a Kitchenaid, you have a 5 year warranty on any electronic element or control board. You may have a temperature sensor that is not working right. The oven just might need to be calibrated, the instructions would be in your owners manual. Your bake element might be failing, it would have to be ohmed out. You also need to verify that the bake element is getting 240V. when turned on. Catriver...post back
