So does it show anything at all when you turn it off and then back on or is it just black now matter what?

It is possible you may have hit the key combo to send video output to an external montior so try this:
find and hold in the FN key
look for a key with a blue or yellow monitor that may look like a T.V. this is the external monitor key
while holding the FN key press the External monitor key and see if anything happens.
If you do not see anything at all on the screen no matter what, you may have broken the Video Adapter or unplugged the VGA cable. You could take the battery out and keep it unplugged for 24 hours if you are hopeful but if the Video Adapter is gone, the data on the Hard Disk Drive is probably still recoverable and you need to purchase a new laptop. You can take the RAM and Hard Drive out and sell the rest as parts (CPU, Heatsink, case, DVD, wifi, etc...)

It sounds as if the display cable was jarred loose. This is located below the keyboard.

Do the following or if you live in the Denver, CO area, I can do this for you.

1. Shut down the notebook. If you are unsure whether the
notebook is off or in Hibernation, turn the computer on a
then shut it down through the operating system.
2. Disconnect all external devices connected to the notebook.
3. Disconnect the power cord.
4. Turn the notebook upside down with the rear panel
toward you.
5. Remove the 3 PM2.5×13.0 screws that secure the strip cover
to the notebook.
Note: 2 of the screws that secure the strip cover to the notebook
also secure the thermal cover. It is not necessary to remove
the thermal cover to remove the strip cover.
6. Remove the 4 PM2.5×3.0 screws that secure the keyboard
to the notebook.
7. Lift the rear edge of the keyboard up and swing it toward
you until it rests on the palm rest.
8. Disconnect the ZIF connector to which the keyboard cable
is attached and disconnect the keyboard cable.
9. Re-connect the display cable to the system board.
10. Reverse steps 1 through 8 for re-assembly.

If you feel that this is too much info, then contact a reputable pc company in your area and have them follow the above steps. Please let me know what happens and thank you. Binary Bob

Compaq presario V5000 laptop blank screen

Does the hard drive light blink like there is activity? It sounds like your laptop is not posting. Unfortunately on a laptop if it fails to post it is likely the motherboard..

I would verify first that you Cannot get the external monitor to work by using the function + Keys on your keyboard to enable the secondary display (Usually something like FN+F4) FN being the key on the lower left of your keyboard between ctrl and alt typically..

If you cannot get it to display, Try an ESD Discharge.. Basically unplug the power brick from the laptop, Remove the battery and try turning it on.. While trying to turn it on contact your fingers on the metal prongs that protrude from the where the battery was on the laptop. This will discharge any built up static electricity from the laptop. Try hooking it all back up and booting.. Good luck

Blank screen

If your laptop screen is not working and is blank, you are out of luck as far as working on your computer. However, while there may be a major problem you need to troubleshoot, there are some easy solutions to keep in mind as well, such as brightness settings and your power source.

1. Check the power source. While you have presumably already attempted to turn your laptop on and off, the problem may lie with your AC power adapter. Is the power-indicator light on the adapter on? If not, your problem may lie here. However, whether or not you have a power indicator light on your adapter, consider unplugging it and plugging it into another outlet. This may turn on your laptop and take care of your blank-screen problem.

2. Check your brightness settings. While it seems like a simple oversight, the brightness on your laptop may sometimes be turned all the way down. Thus, the screen appears to be black, off or defective, when the problem is simply that the brightness is on its lowest setting. To fix the brightness, check your laptop keyboard. Most laptops have the brightness settings mapped to two keys at the top left of the keyboard, accompanied by a symbol (often a sun). Use these keys to fix your brightness, but keep in mind that some laptops require that you press the Function key at the same time as the Brightness key.

3. Check the status of your laptop battery itself. There should be a battery indicator on the laptop that is connected to the battery. This indicator is either on the bottom of the laptop or (likely) on the side. If there is no indicator, your battery itself may be the problem, and may require replacing. Keep in mind that older batteries of the nickel-cadmium variety are more likely to decharge over time and forget their initial maximum charge level; this may be a particular issue to users of older laptops.

4. Find a VGA connector and hook up your laptop to an external monitor if the above steps have not alleviated the blank-screen problem. Turn on the computer and the external monitor. Does the external monitor light up? If so, the blank screen is likely due to a video subset problem/LCD problem in your laptop.

5. Consider that a deeper problem may exist if the external monitor did not light up This problem may lie in the motherboard. In this case, taking the laptop to a professional repairman or sending it off to the manufacturer is recommended.

I hope you find it very helpful. Best regards from fixya
