Yes.....Most motherboards come with onboard sound....just hook up your speakers to the appropriate jack (usually lime green in colour).
All sound will be heard ....including system sounds.

How and where would you hook up speakers with no sound card? The short answer is no, but if you hooked up speakers to the LINE OUT on your CD ROM, you would probably hear music that the cd rom is playing, but you would not hear typical sounds that a computer makes.

I hooked up new speakers to my computer because the old ones suddenly stopped working. Now that I am trying to install the new ones the control panal says there is not audio device to detect.

my t5400 surround sound speakers worked fina at first without buying a sound card. I just plugged it into the back. Problem is vista overwrote the speaker settings on an update and now it only shows two speaker setup. No options to reinstall surround sound but i am still looking.

Some motherboards come with built in sound cards. Check the outputs on the rear of the computer and see if there are any jacks for audio output.
