FWD-50PX1 wil not power up

Hello, I have a Sony FWD-50PX1 that will not power up. When I plug the power cord in I hear a fan turn on and it turns off a few seconds later. A few more seconds go by and it does it again. It cycles like this non-stop. Do you have any idea what would cause this and if the tv is worth saving.
Thanks

I checked partstore.com, they do not list a lamp for that model. Do you know of another place to find one?

  • ginahill742 Dec 11, 2008

The green light comes on. I hear a relay switch. One second later I hear a fan turn on, it runs for 2 seconds an turns off for 5 seconds and the cycle starts again. The manual talks about a self diagnosis function of blinking lights for a code. I do not see a blinking light, only the green light on the front.
    Thanks, Jack

"try to check out the circuit board's inside with a expert technician." So you think I should take this to a repair shop?

Update: The 4 fans cycle 5 times and then stay on until the power switch is turned off. The the green light turns red. I check all the capacitors and I can not see any damage.

    still not working

  • ginahill742 Dec 12, 2008

The original owner stated it worked fine and then stopped working one day. No sound also.

I purchased a power supply from DISCOUNT MERCHANT. That did not fix the problem so I sold the tv as is for $160 and the guy I sold it to paid a repair shop $150 to replace capacitors on the power supply and the tv works great. And I lost $170 on the board I puchased from Discount Merchant. I knew the board was bad but I did not want to spend another $170 and take a chance on getting another bad board.

Hmmm i dont think is worth spending money repairing it, Get it replaced by warranty or if you dont have warranty, there's other new tv that are cheaper than what it would cost you to repair yours

Hi there
It has nothing to do with the "lamps" as its not a projector TV, it should on self diagnostics but isn't flashing, indicating that the TV has more serious problems like a power relay switch that has part blown (sometimes you cannot tell if are blown).
Sony say to cantact them with the flash code and they will tell you the problem, but in this case you don't have that luxury.
If the TV is still under warranty have it repaired by sony, if its out of warranty you have no choice but to consult a sony TV technician

kind regards

it can also happen if lot of dust accumlated on the internal main board of the tv.just open the back of the tv by removing the screws with a proper screw driver and clean that dust with a air blower on the board. then on the main board also check out for any loose transsistor or any burned component.if there is any replace that part.u can get this part at local electronic store or at radio shack websites.alsoinspect/suspect the power supply board (the one where the AC plugs in to) and measure the basic output voltages if you have a multimeter. Be careful not to touch or short anything else, including the high voltage used on the tube. this will clear the problem.

Plasma Tvs do not use a lamp to illuminate the screen but different circuits and they are called Y sustainer, X sustainer boards together with left and right buffer boards; very often these boards (Y or X sustainer) become defective due to the amount of heat that is generated when they are operating.
If you are not familiar with electronics devices, it would be better to consult a TV repair to diagnose the failure and the tech will tell you what is wrong with your plasma.
Good Luck.

It seems like your plasma has 2 years warranty. If your TV is less then 2 years old, it might be still fixed under manufacturers warranty.

Wow these people helping you don't know what they're talking about. A plasma has no lamp. Sony only made plasma TVs for 1 year and then got out of that technology. This TV is that hardest plasma I have ever worked on.. and I've repaired just about every brand. Any circuit board is going to run you $200 plus dollars. It sounds like a bad power supply as it does not go into a shutdown or spit out an error code. The power supply is about the only part that could be easily replaced, so there is a good chance of you repairing it, but it'd definately a tricky tv. Once you remove the back, there is a second back to remove (shielding).. If you get inside, you might find damage to the power supply. You can check the voltage outputs to see if there are any shorts on the Vs or Va lines, if so, the problem could be a drive board. Let me know if you want instruction to troubleshoot internally. This is definately a hardware failure.

HI,
The best approach here would be to take it in for repairs , as working inside the TV cabinet would require prior experience with the electrical circuts inside,so that you donot risk any injury.

Thanks

Try unplugging and plugging the tv back in. Could also be a problem with the power button itself. Make sure the membrane contacts are clean and that the membrane is making contact with the contacts.

There are bad capacitors on the power supply that needs changing. Also check the B+ capacitors on the inverter board also for leaky caps or caps that are puffy on their tops.

I don't think they exist, I would try contacting Sony directly first.

Is it imperative you have HDMI? I can recommend an excellent HDMI to component video converter if you are using an HDMI only source.
