If the disk runs on a fat 32 file system it can not take files that is bigger then about 4GB, so if the file is bigger you will youst get up a message that the disk i full, if this is the problem try converting the disk to NTFS.

Hope it helps

This is indicative of the hard drives, tracking head becoming stuck or misaligned.

I would advise backing up all the data you currently need off oth disk then replacing it as it is only a matter of time become the disk becomes completely unreadable,

Getting message back up failed i/o device error Any help available?

Your attempt to write files to the disk-drive inside the external case has "failed" -- the data could not _correctly_ be written.

So, if your Passport is still under warranty, exercise the warranty to get it repaired/replaced.

If the warranty has ended, it's possible to disassemble the case, remove the "dead" disk-drive, buy a replacement disk-drive, connect it, and reassemble it, and "reuse" the external case.

My drive is full so it won't back up anymore!

Check the backup settings in the software that came with the device. You may be saving every backup instead of saving incrementally. An incremental backup will back up the files that have changed after doing one full backup.
You can also view the files on the drive through Windows Explorer.
The files should be dated. Delete the oldest files making sure that they seem to be the same size as the next oldest file.
If your computer is not faulty, and the files on the backup are not the only place that they are copied, you can start over with the backup drive, change the backup settings and create an incremental backup routine.
Depending on the size in Gigabytes of the backup drive, you are limited to the amount of data you can back up.
Example:
If you have a 500Gigabyte drive in your computer and the external backup drive is 250 Gigabytes,a full system backup will not fit.
Go to Windows Explorer, Click on My Computer and view the available space and total size for each drive.

Not enough free disk space error

I saw that my drive was FAT32 and my machine is NTFS, wasn't sure that could be the issue until you replied advising the 4gb restriction. Does not make sense i transferd 4gb before, but none the less I reformatted the drive to NTFS and my file transfered just fine.
Thank you for your input.

Alright so the disk 0 recovery (D) partition is the one that you will want to expand. What you want to do next is to shrink the primary partition by right clicking on that partition and selecting the shrink volume option. I'm not sure what size your drive or partition is but about 2 gigs should safice. Once you've done this than you'll want to right click on the recovery partition and expand this volume so that it takes up the 2 gigs of space that you freed by shrinking the primary volume. This should give you ample space for backup files. If you do not have enough space still than just repeat steps.

Is there a way to recover lost data from my Western Digital My Book??

Yes, there is a way to recover lost data from a WD drive.

First thing first - STOP using your WD drive immediately! If you continue using the disk drive, you significantly increase the risk that the files you want to recover will be lost forever due to overwritten. Every new file or action will take up more "free space" and reduce your chances of retrieving your deleted files from WD.

The next step - get a good HDD data recovery software to retrieve the data as most as possible.
