If the disk runs on a fat 32 file system it can not take files that is bigger then about 4GB, so if the file is bigger you will youst get up a message that the disk i full, if this is the problem try converting the disk to NTFS.

Hope it helps

Please make sure that the external hard drive is plugged directly into a usb port on the computer and not a usb hub. Try disconnecting all usb devices besides your keyboard and mouse and external hard drive.
Also see if this applies to your computer, see the link below.

My drive is full so it won't back up anymore!

Check the backup settings in the software that came with the device. You may be saving every backup instead of saving incrementally. An incremental backup will back up the files that have changed after doing one full backup.
You can also view the files on the drive through Windows Explorer.
The files should be dated. Delete the oldest files making sure that they seem to be the same size as the next oldest file.
If your computer is not faulty, and the files on the backup are not the only place that they are copied, you can start over with the backup drive, change the backup settings and create an incremental backup routine.
Depending on the size in Gigabytes of the backup drive, you are limited to the amount of data you can back up.
Example:
If you have a 500Gigabyte drive in your computer and the external backup drive is 250 Gigabytes,a full system backup will not fit.
Go to Windows Explorer, Click on My Computer and view the available space and total size for each drive.

If you need more help, Use Fixya's new Phone Call Service. For $29.99 an expert will walk you through the setup and drive check.

External Hard Drive isn't recognized on new Vista Computer

here are several possibilities
Bad Cable - Well it is probably unlikely, but I would first try another USB cable just to make sure the cable is not damaged.
2. Power Supply - Try another power supply if you have or can borrow one
3. Controller Failed – The Controller inside it has failed.
4.Drive Failure – The Hard Disk inside has failed. Drives typically have an average 5 year lifespan, some last longer and some can fail much sooner. Unfortunately, you rarely have any warning, thus the need for backups.

Not enough free disk space error

I saw that my drive was FAT32 and my machine is NTFS, wasn't sure that could be the issue until you replied advising the 4gb restriction. Does not make sense i transferd 4gb before, but none the less I reformatted the drive to NTFS and my file transfered just fine.
Thank you for your input.

Alright so the disk 0 recovery (D) partition is the one that you will want to expand. What you want to do next is to shrink the primary partition by right clicking on that partition and selecting the shrink volume option. I'm not sure what size your drive or partition is but about 2 gigs should safice. Once you've done this than you'll want to right click on the recovery partition and expand this volume so that it takes up the 2 gigs of space that you freed by shrinking the primary volume. This should give you ample space for backup files. If you do not have enough space still than just repeat steps.

That will typically mean that the backup software was trying to backup a file that was deleted sometime between when the initial index of all the files was made and when the actual file was to be backed up. This typically happens with temporary files or files in a browser cache or similar. If you were using your machine at the time of the backup, it is even more likely to occur. I would suggest you look at the log file and see exactly what file(s) wasn't backed up.
