Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, pls a different keyboard but this time use a different port. There would be three (3) ways to connect a keyboard, PS/2, USB and wireless (but that still uses USB). So if it does not work in one try then to use another method of connecting it.

Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa. Happy Holidays.

Presumeyou've got Windows. Try to start up in SAFE mode and verify if your keyboard works.
An ultimate test might be to start up using WinPE - a very basic CD resident Windows. You can download one from

HERE'S THE ANSWER TO YOUR PROBLEM:

Try to do it:

1. Turn off the computer.

2. Unplug the AC adapter.

3. Take out the battery.

4. Hold the power button to the right for 30 seconds.

5. Put the battery back in.

6. Plug the AC adapter back in.

7. Turn it on.

See if it works. If it works, Congratulations! If nothing happens, contact your service provider about it. Thank you!

The whole thing started when my keyboard stopped working. I unplugged it and plugged in the keyboard from my daughter's computer and it worked - yay! But, not so fast, then my daughter needed her keyboard...

USB port is plug-and-play, however, PS/2 port is not.
therefore, what you have to do is shunt down the computer and plug in the keyboard, then fire up the computer.
once you unpluged the keyboard. and plug it back again, the computer will not recognize the keyboard is attached, but it knows when the keyboard is disconnected.

Just bought a Dell Inspiron 518 for my daughter. We want to use her MS Ergonomic Multimedia keyboard with it - downloaded drivers from Microsoft. Still doesn't work.

Go to the device manager and see if it is showing up under keyboards. Most of the time you have to uninstall the old driver before it will allow the new driver to work. Let me know.

just unplug the keyboard from the back of the cpu.the shut off the machine directly then again connect the key board and restart the machine if it still does not works that means the key board is faulty and it needs to be replaced.

Some keys work some dont

You can probably find a keyboard on Ebay that will fit you computer. It is not difficult to change the keyboard, but it does require some expertise.
As a temporary solution you can use an external USB keyboard or a wireless keyboard. They are readily available.

The Keyboard not working, MS Wireless, laser, desktop 5000

i don't like the sound of you taking the hard drive out of a old computer and loading it in your new one without reinstalling windows especially with windows XP your choice i guess.

Did you try and couple the keyboard and receiver by pressing and holding the button on the keyboard for a while?
