Had my VS-5059 since early '96, never a problem before yesterday. All of a sudden in the middle of a movie last night, there was a small bright flash on the screen and then the picture went black. Sound continues to work from multiple inputs and power LED is on, but absolutely no light on the screen. Tried the hold the Input/Menu buttons for 8 seconds trick to look for an error code, no response on the power LED. What do I do next??
Try checking the horizontal output transistor as that is one of the most common failure parts. This is a 3-legged part attached to a heatsink close to the flyback transformer (part with large red wire coming out the top)
At this point, I would be checking the cables first. How is the dish
connected to the TV? Since the VCR works as expected, the TV video and
audio circuits are functioning. It is possible that the particular
input you are using for the Dish is bad, but lets verify the cables
first. Update this with the status of the cables and simple diagram of
the connections you are using.
Are there any other indications at all? Blinking light? Also, are
you familiar with soldering? If so, try resoldering any connections on
the board that appear grainy or have rings.

This sounds like a broken flyback on the main board....about 70.00 for part but they will charge you about $300.00 to $500.00 in labor
Video card must have fried, you have to decide wheter you wanna get that replaced or buy a new one.. Good luck
The cost of repair for this problem will be around $600 min. and then there is no guarantee something else won't fail due to age and hours of operation, new LCD TV's are very cheap now, less than $1000 for a 46" wide screen, when u see the quality of the picture even in normal 480i resolution u will be amazed

My Mitsubishi VS5059 50" projection TV suddenly has no video. Audio works fine from all inputs but completely black screen, not even a hint of light from any of the 3 guns. One response suggested something called a "flyback" (I have no idea what a flyback is) on the main board may be the problem, another suggested the video card might be fried. How do I find out if this is worth fixing or it's time for the scrap heap for this baby?
Any other thoughts on this out there? I'd hate to throw this set away if there is any possibility of salvaging it at a reasonable cost.
