Same problem - happens on battery or mains. Have rescued the data off the disk using a USB enclosure but am now without a laptop.

I have had this problem on 2 NX5000's and 1 NC6000, and reading up on the internet, it seems to be a common fault on these models, and seems to lie with a track/dry joint on one of the IC's on the left-hand side of the motherboard. I found that if you press down firmly on the left-hand side of the keyboard, it will boot a few more times, but it will eventually give-up completely. The only way I've found is to replace the motherboard.

I had the same problem on my NX5000. Resoldering the connections on the Maxim chip solved it. Although it could have also been solved by completely disassembling the machine and putting it back together. In any case, my machine is back up has been working for a couple of days now.

mine does the same thing. Dont think it's motherboard. More likely hard drive or memory. I havent fixed mine, just bought a new laptop. Hope this helps

Same problem I know it is the motherboard. For all of you who cannot fix this then there is another way to get your nx5000 to work. Remove the screws for the button panel and keyboard then disconnect your display. If you now connect an external display you can use your pc again.

Ok now typing this for the 8th time . what's wrong with this site ..
firt remove the battery and the ac power cable .. now hold the power button for 30 seconds . reconnect the power cable and you should be able to turn it back on .. i had to do i twice on my laptop becouse it turned it back off by holding the power button while it was starting up so i could put the battery back in .
anyway if it does not work the first time then just try it again
this is the first thing you should try and especialy if you don't know what your doing

Firstly disconnect the cable for screen from *********** board and connect your pc to an external monitor/ LCD and start your computer. If the computer now works then your computer screen cable has a faulty connection to its invertor card in the screen. Check the cable contact is loosen.
I had my compaq 5000 fixed by this processedure. Good luck

I just got my nx5000 up and running again. The memory needed to be reseated in the socket (got this tip of the HP site) All I did was open it up and reseat the ram - just took it out and put it back in again. Problem solved. I also took the opportunity to vacuum a little bit of dust out, but I don't think this was anything to do with the problem.

Get a copy of the service manual (Just google "hp service manual nx5000") it has easy instructions at how to get to the memory - it is just under the keyboard.

Hope this helps!

Ok... the memory thing worked temporarily, the true cause is as sherzy found - broken/dry joints around one of the components. The offending chip is on the bottom of the main board and is labelled maxim 1987. There is a long discussion of this at the HP Business Support Forum called nc6000 no startup.

This may take a little bit of expert help to fix, but if you know the right people or are handy with the soldering iron (or hot air) it is well worth it. The work is fairly delicate - mine was done under a microscope with a very fine tipped soldering iron. After resoldering all the joints on the maxim 1987 chip my nx5000 is back up and running again and so far no more problems.

it seems that you have damage memory card replacing may fix a problem but its better for it that you bring it to a technician in order to check much better because the motehrboard may possible be the problem.

Power drain would be a better solution in this case.
1.first shut down the comp
2.unplug the charger
3. remove the battery
and after press and hold the power button for 60 seconds without any charger and the battery. After the 60 seconds replug the battery and the charger and turn the computer

HP/Compaq NX5000 - USB ports register "power surge" problem with 1 flash drive, does not register other USB devices

This is one of about 4 thhings that can cause this problem.
The bios could be glitching out on you.
One of your usb ports has cracked or broken solder causing an arcing condition(most likely cause).
Usb driver corruption.
First try the BIOS fix, see if that works.
Unplug the laptop, and take out battery.
With no power to pc, hold power buttom in for approxamitely 30 seconds.
Release power button, replace battery, and plug laptop back in.
Try to reboot and see if it now works properly.
If not, then unless you are willing to take the laptop apart, then you will need to take it to an authorized HP/Compaq service center and have them re-solder your usb jacks in place.

Like I said, this is the most likely problem, as usb jacks, like power jacks, are notorious for breaking solder connections due to the movement of the socket with whatever is being plugged into it.
For ubd drivers, insert your system resource disk, and re-install your usb drivers.
If you don't have a disk, you can go to the HP/Compaq website and manually fdownload the drivers as well.

First check to ensure the battery is properly seated. If it's in good, then this is probably a power supply issue or a problem with the motherboard.

Compaq nx5000 with new battery and new power

Dear,

Try pressing the CAPS LOCK. If CAPS LOCK is responding then it is surely your inverter.

It is a known problem with the nx5000 series laptop.

The FAN switches off because Intel SpeedStep which is absolutely normal.

I faced and solved at least 6 - 7 such problems on different nx5000 laptops

If CAPS LOCK is not responding then its your motherboard.

Good Luck and Regards

Hello...
You bring it to its authorized service center. The technicians are more than willing to help you fix that. And if it has still a warranty, you bring it with you. Even if it has no warranty at all, if it's their product, they will fix it. :)

Both USB ports suddenly don't work on my Campaq nx5000 notebook. I get power from both because the light under the mouse lights up. Any ideas what could be wrong? Thanks.

try to check the device manager.

by right clicking my computer, then hardware tab, device manager.

on the device manager check for the usb drivers if they are installed properly, if there is a problem you will see a yellow exclamation point on the usb.

try also to check for the updated drivers for the usb controllers on your laptop.
