Rear surround speakers not working

I recently bought a rx-v363 open box at best buy without the remote control to replace an all in one amplifier and dvd player that used only bare speaker wire (it was over 100 bucks cheaper and has a 30 day return policy). According to my dvd player (i bought a new one) I should be able to use a coax out to get the receiver to decode 5.1 and I have the setting as specified on the dvd player output. However, despite playing with settings and rereading the manual, i can only get sound out of my front 3 speaker. I know the wiring is good from the old system, is there a setting I'm missing to get this to work?

SOURCE: I have a Yamaha RX-V363

There is likely a static charge (voltage / difference of potential) between the the receiver and the TV.

They should have their grounds tied together. This should be covered in your owner's manuals.

In some cases, there may also be a stray voltage on the cable line's ground. If grounding the two together doesn't work, you may want to call the cable company (or you or a friend may be able) to check the cable line for a stray voltage or bad ground.

SOURCE: No Soound on Subwoofer from Yamaha RX-V363

I have the same setup. Are you going out of the subwoofer output of the reciever? (it's purple.) then into the LFE jack of the subwoofer (also purple.) That's the only connection you need besides power. If you have those right, try using your cable for something else to make sure the cable is good. Is the indicator of the subwoofer green? Mine comes on with the reciever. Good luck!

SOURCE: My Yamaha receiver stops working when using DVD plsyer

Is your BluRay connected via HDMI? and if so, are any other sources connected the same? if not, just for arguments sake, try hooling up the BluRay via component and digital coaxial or optical. Yamaha as well as all other AV receiver MFG have had big issues with HDMI processing. HDMI has been battling with the recording industry over HDCP and copyright issues on recording via HDMI. So, that's why HDMI has been so flaky. It's been thru versions 1.1,1.1a,1.2,1.2a,1.3a, and now 1.3b, which seems to work so far.... Anyway, sorry to stray off topic, however, HDMI has been a blessing and a curse for both professionals and consumers alike and has caused multiple strange issues with all products that use the technology. Hope this helps. Post a comment if you need further help. I've got lots of contacts for crazy issues!

Any Tape Out (REC) is flat Line Level output for any analog source selected by the RX-V1000.

Or you could just set up Zone 2 as on Page 61 in the manual - with or without the remote capability.

The receiver automatically pick the best configuration for the source audio. Most music is 2 channels being up-sampled to 4 channels. (Sub-out is separate.)

Sound not coming through speakers correctly

Check that the speaker setting on the receiver is set to large not small. (if you have 6inch or larger woofers)

If you have only small speakers you will need a subwoofer.

this sounds strange, but is true. you need to run your digital audio optical cable from your tv to your receiver (after, of course, connecting tv/receiver via hdmi). so, hdmi from blue ray to rec - hdmi from rec to tv - then optical from tv back to rec. it's round about, but that is how yamaha says (and the only way it works) to do it.

Rear Surround speakers

Best thing to do is to put the unit in 5 channel or 7 channel mode. That will send left ch information to the front left and rear left speakers ( both will get the same information). Ditto with the right channel. The center channel will get centre channel information.

If all the speakers work, go out and rent TOP GUN. ( yes its old), BUT there are a few extreme scenes , one of which is the elevator scene, where the camera changes perspective and suddenly you hear the elevator doors close BEHIND you through only the surround speakers ( have the unit in surround mode....NOT 5 or 7 ch mode ). If this works ok, then you have no problems.

Remember, surround sound only produces information in the rear channels when the information is there. To check out the digital and DTS decoders, get an action flick. If you can, get a remote too, because that will unlock many features about the receiver that you cant get to with the front panel controls. Also go to yamaha and download the owners manual ( its free !!).....that should get you going.....

best of luck...
