Hotpoint vtd20 dryer aquarius - cuts out when overheats
I have a 2nd hand hotpoint vtd20 tumble dryer aquarius model. Only a couple of small problems with it. One is the door handle is slightly broken so sometimes hard to open (anyone know if i can get parts to repair it?) and also if it sometimes cuts out after a bit of time and fuses all electric appliances. Any ideas? Would be grateful for any advise. Caz

You can get spare parts on line by going to, www.hotpoint.co.uk
Re your other prob ,it is probably due to a fault with the heater, disconnect the heater and run the dryer .if it does not cut out then your heater needs replacing.

There is a
high probability it is a thermistor tripping out. It cuts power to the heater
or fan, or both if the tumble dryer overheats.
UNPLUG THE MACHINE FROM THE WALL BEFORE PROCEEDING.
At the back of the machine, you will see a bulge, held in place by half a dozen or so screws, that covers tha fan and heater element. Once removed, you will see the heating element and the
thermistors (I think there are 3 on this model). The thermistor is round, about the size of your
thumbnail, set into an oval metal casing, usually with 2 holes in it to mount
it and a couple of spade connectors coming off it.. (See a
picture here: http://www.espares.co.uk/part/tumble-dryers/thermostats/indesit/isl70c/p/1587/805/0/552087/552036/tumble-dryer-thermostat-k.html) Typically, the back of the centre thermistor will have a small hole in it that you can poke a paperclip end into. Basically,
the thermistor is a convex bi-metal disc that, when it gets too hot, pings and
becomes concave, by pushing a paperclip into the hole, you push out the disc
and make it concave again (You will hear it click as you push the pin in).
This is usually all that you will need to do to fix the problem. However, if it was an overheat trip out, you need to ask yourself why this happened. There are usually 2 possible causes: 1) The dryer was overloaded 2) The filters were clogged 3) The heating element is faulty and requires replacement.
1) Is very unlikely. 2) is the most common culprit. 3) will show its self if you clean the filters and the problem keeps reoccuring. If you do have to swap out the heating element, you will find they are easily available on Ebay.
