What if my coffee tastes bad?

Same Problem

Dec 28, 2008

-   I have tried the Melitta coffee pot cleaner, Dip-It and vinegar. I have changed coffee beans... no use. The coffee ends up tasting bitter and burnt. I thought it was my water, but coffee out of a french press tastes just great. Huge waste of $100+ dollars. -   cherizzy

-   I have tried distilled water, freshly ground coffee binds with varying granularity bought from a specialty coffee shop brewed on a variety of machines including a Krupps expresso/cappucino maker. Always the same result from the start -burnt!. The coffee maker at work always produces great coffee. What is the ideal water temperature? Shouldn't these machines be designed not to exceed a particular temperature.
So tired of nasty coffee.

-   I have the same problem. The palstic-y smell and taste. I even washed the plastic water container with soap. Next I will try running vinegar with the water through the machine. Because Im ready to return this! Not happy with this so far. I hope this will work.-   nancymalia

-   I have the same problem. I am running distilled white vinegar through the machine, then running hot water through the machine. I'm told by Keurig, the makers of my one-cup coffee maker, that this will take care of that plastic-y, chemical taste and smell. We shall see!-   Guest

-   I have the same problem. It cropped up on a Caprisso machine I have had for years. I bought a new Cuisinart and immediately, the same problem. I returned it and got a Cuisinart bean grinder/coffee maker. The same putrid, smelly, metal-tasting results.

I have used all types of water, cleaned the machines, gold and paper filters.......

The only solution that makes any sense to me is the notion that the water may be too hot and the coffee grounds are burned.

Can someone tell me how to measure the water temp and what the temperature should be?

Thank you.

I have had this problem too and it's not the water or the coffee or the water filter. This started happening to me several months after using it daily for no apparent reason.

New units need to be cleaned to ensure that there is no plastic taste.
The water or type of water being used may affect the taste of the coffee.
Old or stale coffee will affect the taste of the coffee.

Perhaps you can check the watertemperature...if the water is too hot... the grinded beans will burn because of the hot water.

The problem seems to be that the water temp is too low, causing bitterness with the brew. If your Cuisanart has a 1-4 button, push that in. This double heats the water and makes the brew a lot smoother.

Check the grind of the beans. Too fine and it can possibly make it to strong or too bitter. Too coarse and it will be too weak. Adjust the coffee volume. Also, check the freshness of the beans. Buy freshly roasted beans then grind only what you need the same day you will be using them. Most home model brewers are calibrated to brew a commercial Folgers or Maxwell house type pre-ground blend. Be sure to grind fresh beans to the same coarseness.

The changes of the original was the water you use was high content such as chlorine., build up contaminant in the heating elements . Best water you may use the purified water .

don't buy crappy coffee. Only buy fresh roasted beans and grind them just before you brew them. A fresh roast will taste best in the first five days. If your really keen you should roast the beans yourself.

I have had my Cuisinart Automatic Grind & Brew Thermal for about 6 months.  The coffee tastes bitter, and the problem is getting worse.  I have tried different types of coffee beans, bottled water and tap water, but the coffee is still bitter.  I clean the coffeemaker according to instructions, but nothing seems to help.

I make our coffee at work on a bunn w/water filter and classic roast folgers. It comes out perfect everytime. Smells, and tastes fresh!!
At home we have a popular cuisinart. It is new with only a few uses on it. It also has a water filter on it. i am using the same coffee and mixture and have tried different types of filters (paper and gold) but the coffee still tastes and smells crappy. What am I doing wrong!!!???
