Travelmate 290 starts then shuts down

Travelmate 290 laptop is 4 yrs old. Was working fine. Reinstalled recovery cds due to laptop running really slow. Installed only antivirus and a few kids programs. All of a sudden, now upon startup, it just shuts down. Sometimes after login when starting up programs. Sometimes before even gets to windows xp screen. Hear fan immediately after hitting start button but not after.

OK people, I have this old acer 290 the battery refuses to charge so I use the power adapter but when I swith it on it may quickly flash on and then hang, turns completely off dead as a door nail. this happened all the time untill one day I left the battery out of it plugged the power adapter in and the problem dissapeared. I have not yet replaced the battery so dont know if a new battery will solve the problem when reinstalled?

Possible Fan Problem

You may have a power supply problem.
Might not be pwering enough to run the fan.
I would have my power supply tested.
Some places will do it on the spot for free

Computer shuts down and tries to reboot in an endless cycle

This sounds like a heat related issue.
Are you sure that the CPU fan is running and that the vent ducts are all clear?
You maye be able to get it cleaned out with a can of compressed air.
Is the computer new? If so, then it is probably not dust, but if it is more than a couple of years old, then that is probably the problem.
