Battery Won't Charge/Computer Won't Run on AC

I have an Acer Aspire 3000. I got it for my graduation about a year and a half ago. About six months after I got it the power cord seemed to stop working. It wouldn't charge the battery at all and it would eventually run out and I wouldn't be able to use the computer until all of a sudden it started to charge again. I went to the place where I purchased it, they tested the power cord out and said that that was the problem. I bought a new generic power cord (a Kensington which sells different "tips" to plug into your specific computer). It worked fine. However, the problem has persisted. I had to buy a new tip two times and each time they broke. I just bought a new one and it doesn't seem to work at all. I'm thinking that the problem can't be the power cord because it wouldn't break down four times. Could the problem be the battery? Or may there be something wrong with my computer? If so, what?

Re: Battery Won't Charge/Computer Won't Run on AC

I agree going through this many AC power adaptor jacks seems excessive. Either it?s a bad design, you?re real rough on equipment or perhaps the tip isn?t the problem. If you?re having the same problem again take it to a more tech oriented shop and have them test the AC adaptor AND the PC socket the tip plugs into. What may be happening is their may be a bad connection or an outright defective socket, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn?t. If you test the AC power adaptor and you know its good you may be able to test this theory on your own by plugging the AC adaptor in and wiggling the jack in the socket to see if you can get the charge LED to go on and off. Its not too uncommon for these power sockets to go bad, unfortunately replacing them requires a major disassembly of the laptop. I had a similar problem with my Acer Aspire after I got a replacement battery about 6 months ago.
I was told to disconnect the laptop, turn it off, disconnect the battery, then press the power button for 30 seconds to reset the charging circuit.

I did this, but it didn't work any better. I thought that since my charger seems to run the computer, but it says 0% Available (plugged in, charging) that there was something wrong with the battery.

So, I contacted the manufacturer of the battery and they said they would refund my money within 7 days after receipt, and they gave me an RMA number for the return on the address label.

I, also, got the battery from Ebay.
Since your problem is that the battery icon with a red X over it says 0%, I would say that maybe the battery is bad, or maybe the battery is not connected very well at the contacts. Maybe blow the contacts off with compressed air in order to clean any dust which may be on it.

I would maybe try another battery to try to see if the charging circuit is bad on the laptop.

If another battery doesn't work, then the charging circuit between the laptop and the battery may be faulty.

Good luck on this repair.

Sorry. It seems that your battery is dead.
If your laptop is working fine on AC power only (with the battery disconnected), then your battery will need to be replaced.

Sounds to me like the transformer circuit that enables the batery to charge. If you have bought your machine within the last 12 months it should still be covered by warranty so go back to the supplier. If not covered I wouod still try as it is not beyond reasonable expecations that the machine will operate perfectly in very way for more than 1 year.

My battery dies within 20 minutes of use. I've let my battery charge overnight but i still only get about 20 to 30 min of life out of it. is that standard for an Acer Aspire 3000?

If the battery is more than one year old, or has been often used with the power supply plugged in, it might have degraded.

Sometimes you can regenerate it to some lesser extent by completely draining it and recharging overnight (but that's apparently what you already did).

So I'm afraid you will have to replace it.

A new Acer battery (4400 mAh) should get you at least three hours life, and up to six hours by being real careful (lowest screen luminosity, no disk activity, no heavy usage: e.g., vanilla word processing)

Sounds like it may be the FSB. I had the same sort of problem, though my Aspire was only a few months old and therefore covered under Acer's warranty, but I also have after sales repair insurance too. Either way, I would strongly suggest that you get an engineer to take a look
