The DVD drive will not open. It tries to, but its jammed. It won't open at all. You can hear it try to open, and then close itself back up again. Then it will load the dvd I have in the drive. Any suggestions on how to get this thing open? I'm about to take a screwdriver to it!!

The drive may be bad or jammed up. There is a small pin sized hole to help you manually eject the drawer. Try popping it open and see if you can get it to unjam. Use a straightened out paper clip to fit into the hole and push somewhat firmly. Hopefully this will unjam the drive. If you cannot hear it trying to do something when you hit eject, or if you do not ever see flashing lights, the drive is probably bad.
It is either stuck or jammed but try to use a paper clip in the emergency open hole. If your drive doesn't have a small emergency opening hole on the front of it, try to pull open the door, being careful not to break the plastic. The noise you hear is the gears for opening and closing the door.
There's probably only something jammed in the DVD drive... last one of these I fixed had a penny that my friend's daughter tried to stuff into the system. Once we opened up the Wii, the penny fell out and everything worked great. If there's nothing jammed in the drive, there may be gears or something in there broken. The following website has the full DVD drive... but I would try opening up the Wii first to see if something is jammed in there:
Use my computer and select the drive (eg drive E:). From pull down menu "File" select "eject". While the disk door attempts to open (hear slight movement of tray) massage the door with your fingers. This is done by smoothing out the across front door panel with your finger tips and pushing in and releasing pressure from door. Door should slide open partially and close again. Repeat. The eject button nearside the disc tray doesn't seem to work as well as selecting "File" and "Eject" from the menu. Something to do with the door cycle is less with the direct eject button.
Woah! You don't want to hear this but forcing a second disc into the drive has probably destroyed the drive read head. They are pretty tough and it might be able to survive but you will most certainly have to dismantle the drive to remove the DVD and not create any more damage. Kind of like scraping someone elses car in a parking lot. More damage is done when you try to back off of the other car than the initial hit. (not like that's ever happened to me :) )
Take a pin/needle, and stick it in the small hole which should be somewhere on the front of the dvd rom. This should open the drive a bit, so that u can pull it out. then close it, and try if it opens then. If it doesnt, then you will have to grease the sides of the slide (from the bottom) a bit with vaseline. open and close it manualy a few times, and try then. If it still dont work then, then you may need to replace the little black bellt which it has just underneath the tray, towards the front of the drive.
