Could we get some more detail? What have you tried?

So the Win2K installation is able to connect to the internet and the WinXP is not? Were the drivers installed for the WinXP installation?

To check, in WinXP, go to the start menu, right click on "My Computer" and select properties from the menu. In the new window go to the "Hardware" tab and click on the "Device Manager" button.

If there are any items in the list that have symbols on the left hand side (like a yellow circle with a question mark in the middle) then there are devices that aren't installed.

Which chip controlls usb ports?

Dear,

USB controller

Although many computers have an integrated USB controller on the motherboard, many computers may also have an expansion USB controller card. If your USB connectors are not connected directly to the motherboard it is likely your computer is using an expansion card.

Motherboard USB controller

If your USB controller is integrated on the motherboard it is generally best to consult the motherboard documentation or visit the motherboard manufacturer's web page for online documentation regarding your USB controller.

Expansion card USB controller

If your USB controller is an expansion card it would be best to refer to the manufacturer's documentation or visit the manufacturer's web page for additional information about your USB controller.

Note: If your USB controller is currently installed and working and you are running Microsoft Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000, or Windows XP, you can determine the USB controller currently installed by opening the Universal Serial Bus controllers category in Device Manager. For example, "SiS 7001 PCI to USB Open Host Controller" indicates a computer is using the SiS chipset.

yeah your system doesnt meet system requirement for running windows Vista Premium. Minimum memory required is 1GB.
Another system requirement is 128memory of graphic card with DirectX 9.0 capable and WDDM 1.0 driver support.
so if you dont have graphic card system will take amount of RAM..this why computer became slow.
If you have 'other components' you can take the RAM not HDD then install it..just make sure the RAM is supported by your current system..
I just recomend that would be better using Windows XP, with less RAM required..

P.S : see here for more detail about windows Vista.

I need to reinstall window xp pro on my dell dimension 2400-

If you don't need any files currently on the computer, boot from your Windows XP disc, have it delete the current partition and then format the new partition, and install windows XP.
Note: this will delete anything you currently have on the computer at this time!

I just installed xp pro and it keeps freezing

To get into the Windows 2000 / XP Safe mode, as the computer is booting press and hold your "F8 Key" which should bring up the "Windows Advanced Options Menu" as shown below. Use your arrow keys to move to "Safe Mode" and press your Enter key.
Note: With some computers if you press and hold a key as the computer is booting you will get a stuck key message. If this occurs, instead of pressing and holding the "F8 key", tap the "F8 key" continuously until you get the startup menu.
Trouble Getting into Windows 2000 or Windows XP Safe mode - If after several attempts you are unable to get into Windows 2000 or Windows XP Safe Mode as the computer is booting into Windows, turn off your computer. When the computer is turned on the next time Windows should notice that the computer did not successfully boot and give you the Safe Mode screen.

I would suggest that you run only one stick of Ram at a time to determine if they are the problem.. Also these CPU's had heat problems that damaged the cpu. This also causes freezing. I would consider resetting the CPU and the heat sink, and case fans are clean and working.

use the windows 2000 professional cd to install the windows again, you can install it to another folder so you get to keep your files if you decide to do it this way, ones your computer is working again, make sure you delete the downloaded file, if you start the file again, the one with the virus, you will have todo this all over again.

yes, a 400 mhz processor can run windows xp, but you will want to have a LOT of ram. i would not recommend it unless you have at 256-512 or more ram.

windows 2000 can get along with 128-256 ram.

I have installed Windows XP on my computer where I did have Windows 2000. I want to continue using the XP & uninstall the 2000 - how do I do that?

If you installed XP over 2000, you don't need to uninstall 2000, but If you installed it parallel to 2000, and you have an option to run 2000, and XP when the computer boots, you cannot uninstall 2000 without wiping the Hard Drive and reinstalling from scratch.

If the version of XP that you installed is an upgrade, you will likely have to wipe the hard drive, then install 2000, then run the upgrade install of XP after, but choose to overwrite the 2000 install.
