Question about Kenmore 74602 Gas Dryer

1 Answer

My Kenmore Soft Heat Dryer starts, then stops.

I've had this problem before, but it has always started and stayed on. It makes this high-pitched noise when I try to start it. And before, when it did that, it would just stop working. I could let it rest an hour or so. And then come back and start it. Then; after a few days, the same noise, but I had to roll the dryer by hand to get it to start. And now, it makes the same noise, and it starts. But 3 seconds after, it stops. Can you help me; I would really appreciate it.

Always on high heat and shuts off after 20 minutes

Check the complete venting system inside the dryer and to the vent outside. Be sure and check for lint & god knows what around the blower wheel. Get everything 100% clean. Insert a thermometer into the vent coming out of the dryer with the vent hose off. Start the dryer on high heat & see if it will go to not over 180% and start going lower like 130% or so if it drops back it's ok . If it don't stop & go down cycle thermostat is most likely bad. The reason it won't start for an hour may be the motor gets too hot. You could put an ohm meter across the connection on the cycle therm and heat it with a small torch or something & see if it will show open after heating. Just a guess lots of things cause these problems. Clean that motor too. Lint may cause it too run hot.

Hi- The bearing(s) might be worn or the drum wheels sticking but if it is not starting sometimes you most likely have a motor issue. You'll need someone to come out and take a look at it.

Something could have fallen down into the lint trap area or gotten wrapped around a wheel. The only way to know is to visually inspect for foreign objects. I have some repair photos and a repair manual: HERE

I don't think they can be, but, also take a look at the fan bearing assembly too. You should be able to isolate if the noise is from the motor bearings or blower bearings.
