The cartridge just snaps on, printing half letters may be caused by the ribbon being folded over on itself or not moving. Look at the ribbon toward a light you should see each letter clearly thru the ribbon

How do I increase the margins on the typewriter

To set a margin beyond the left or right margin, move the carrier (or cursor) to that margin, press the Margin Release key, then proceed to move the carrier (or cursor) to the desired position. Then, press the Left or Right margin key to set the new margin. A beep will sound indicating the new margin has been set. When you set a new left or right margin, the previous margin is automatically cleared.

Alternatively, you can type beyond the right margin by pressing the Margin Release key and then continue typing when the carrier (or cursor) stops at the right margin. To type beyond the left margin, press the Margin Release key and then the Backspace key to move the carrier (or cursor) to the position where you want to start typing.

Remember to always use genuine Swintec ribbons and lift-off tapes for your Swintec 7040, which can be found at Swintec Typewriter Supplies .

Seems to stop at the right margin and the margin cannot be released

I would suggest you set the machine back to factory defaults...do the following...switch the machine OFF.
While holding down the Margin release key switch the power ON.
The machine will begin typing a pre-programmed test page..let it run for about 5 secs then switch the machine OFF again.
Wait 5 seconds then switch the machine back on and you should be ready to go.

IBM selectric II carriage stuck in right margin

There is a thin metal ribbon in the back that has come off the wheel. It is a devel of a thing to get back on.

Remove the cover and watch ... you will see what I am talking about.

It may have come un-attached ... equally difficult to fix without the little thingie the typewirter mechanic uses.

good luck

IBM Selectric II-return goes past the margin stop

The margin release mech. is probably gummy and allowing returns to go past the margin. If thi is a dual pitch machine see if the pitch selector lever will move easily. If not use some WD40 on the margin rack.

Resetting the margins on a manual typewriter.

I can't be for sure if these are auto set margins, but it sounds like they might be. If they are, first move the carriage as far to the right as you can. Hold the Left Margin Set (not Margin Release) lever as you move the carriage all the way to the left. Release the Margin Set Button or Lever. Now hold the Right Margin Set Button or Lever (not the Margin Release), and move the carriage all the way to the right while holding the Margin Set. Once the carriage is all the way to the right, release the Margin Set. Move the carriage to the place you want to set your left margin. Hit the Left Margin Set and then release. Move the carriage to where you want to set the right margin. Hit the Right Margin Set and release it. It gets confusing, but Margin Release does not set margins. Its sole purpose is only to bypass the margins. Hope this helps.

Tab Release

You can reset all functions to original settings by doing this simple self test.
1. Turn typewriter off
2. Hold down the margin release key.
3. While holding down margin release key, turn on typewriter.
4. release margin release key
typewriter will now begin to type on it's own.
5. Turn typewriter off and then on again
all settings will now be cleared.

Selectric II return problem

this one is hard to diagnose without actually seeing it, however if it is hanging up on that slider, you can simply remove the slider without any harm to your machine. the slider is a throwback to when "ditto" machines were used for printing. all it does is stop the ribbon from working when it is in the "S" position, and you can do the same thing by removing the ribbon. to remove it, move it to the left and pull till it comes out. if the spring that is attached doesn't come out with it, just pull it out.
however, if the carries goes past the margin all the way to the left of the machine, then this is not going to stop that. what usually causes that is a little lug that faces the carrier on the l. h. margin set lever, if there is a crack in it, it will need to be replaced. also check that when you hit the "mar rel" button the margin rack pivots up then back when you release it. if the rack is stuck in the up position, then that is your problem.

Margin Release for Brother GX-6750 Typewriter

Typewriters have alimit to how far to the right or left that you can set margins. Once you use the alt & 6 key to bypass the current margin setting then move to the new setting then hold the alt key and touch the 7 key to keep it in the new position.
