My wireless button does not turn into blue so I cannot connect to any wireless conncetion

There's a good chance that windows update has updated your driver. If you can connect through a wired connection then go to device manager and network adaptor, right click on the wireless network adaptor and click update driver. Tell it to search automatically and if it gives you the option then yes you do want to search the internet for drivers.
You didn't say so in the question but I'm assuming that your laptop is a Compaq CQ series.

The wireless stopped working soon after I bought it - new, 13 months ago. I mailed it out to ACER and they reinstalled the adaptor driver. I learned that trick of reinstalling the drivers and have had to...

Well most only have 1 adaptor.

Look in ctrl panel system DEVICE MANAGER and see if there is more than 1. Also check that it is working properly and that some other item is not using the same port.

Update the driver from the internet and see if that helps.

Internet/network problems

Connecting the laptop to your network using a network cable, does this solve your Internet problems?
Does this works without the Internet connection dropping out?
If the wireless connection has a low signal, try positioning the wireless router or the laptop to get a better signal strength.
Also try reinstalling your wireless driver.
