I believe u have Vista. There is a known issue with Vista. The drivers in the Windows Vista operating system do not support button press functionality on the product. There is a workaround documented on the HP site. I had the same problem and this KB article helped me resolve it.

The main cause of the issue is that you haven't set the "Front Panel Destination list" in the HP software. As to scan from the printer, you should be able to scan from the hp software.
1st just open the hp software, it could be the Hp Director or Hp Solution Center. 2nd Click on the Settings - Scan settings - Scan to setup. 3rd add all the application availabe at the left side to the right side and then click apply and ok. 4th then turn off the printer as well the hp software. 5th Turn On the printer and try scanning.
Hope this will helps you.
Try using widows paint. Look in windows accessories off the start program menu. If you open windows paint, look for open file from "Scanner or Camera". Most likely you can get the scanner to work again in Vista. Otherwise...try Vuescan scanner software. I think you can get a free trial period online and it should also work. You'll have to pay for that if you like it.
