Did you have XP working on this laptop before without any video issues, sounds like it could be a bad driver install or the wrong driver for the video chipset.

Screen Going Black could be no video whatsoever or just a bad display. If you take a flashlight and hold it to the screen, can you still see a faint image on the monitor? If so, the inverter or the backlight of the panel might be bad and need replacement.

Does the screen display if you connect the laptop to an external monitor?

Try booting into safe mode by continually pressing the F8 key while the system is starting up..this should allow you to get into windows where you can try to reinstall your drivers. Most likely this is a driver issue with the video card or your refresh rate or display resolution is set too high.

Starting problem

Immediately after seeing the Dell logo, keep tapping the 'F8' key,
until you see a "menu" (white text over a black background)
giving "startup" options for Windows XP.

Select "Safe Mode" and see if you can start in that mode.
Then, use "System Restore" to go "back" in time, to the most-recent checkpoint (date/time) where your computer _DID_ work.

Restore to that point, and restart.

I have a dell inspiron 6400 and im getting a black screen once the dell logo comes up and windows xp loads...I see no icons or nothing..just a black screen

it sounds like your display backlight has gone bad. If your handy you can get a new display. If you are really good you can replace the back light.

Dell Inspiron 1525 - Dell Screen- Windows Boot Manger Screen

If it's XP:

You can try a chkdsk or do an XP repair: (your data will not be be erased)
Chkdsk
Take the Windows XP disk. Boot from it, then DO NOT select F2 (automated system recovery) but continue through the procedure until you get to the point where you can choose between installing Windows XP and entering the Recovery Console. Once you get into the Recovery Console, do chkdsk and fix potential errors on your disks! Chkdsk C: /R

XP repair
When you boot with the Win XP install CD-ROM, it loads a minimal operating system, similar to DOS, but compatible with Win XP. At the first screen you select install Win XP (not Recovery Console) and at the next screen it will find that you already have Win XP and offer to attempt a repair. This repair should not touch your Applications or data; it just reinstalls the Windows files. This is great because when it works you don't need to reinstall all your software.

If it is Vista, you would need to do a recovery.

If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.
Thanks, Joe

Laptop Mousepad and Keyboard stuttering, slow

Whenever that happens to me, at least to the mouse pad I restart my laptop and it fixes it...
If not then perhaps it's a hardware or software problem, maybe you could reinstall XP over again, or you could, as a last resort crack it open and see what's goin' on inside or have someone check it out for you (I wouldn't go that far though).

Dell inspirion6000 i load up windows xp now the screen goin black

Restart the PC and as soon as it starts up after the Post Beep and the Bios, press F8 key at the top of your keyboard a few times and you will see a Safe Mode Menu... Your problem is that you are either using the wrong Graphics Driver, or your resolution is not supported by your monitor. You need to go to Device Manager and uninstall the graphics driver and reinstall it... If you don't know which driver to install use Unknown Devices which is an app that will tell you your Unknown Hardware Devices, you can find a good clean version to download at Major Geeks. Google...

Try to reinstall XP again, when prompted to partiton, select to do so.
You will lose everything on the hard drive and will need to reinstall all of your programs.
Hope this helps.
