Restart the PC and as soon as it starts up after the Post Beep and the Bios, press F8 key at the top of your keyboard a few times and you will see a Safe Mode Menu... Your problem is that you are either using the wrong Graphics Driver, or your resolution is not supported by your monitor. You need to go to Device Manager and uninstall the graphics driver and reinstall it... If you don't know which driver to install use Unknown Devices which is an app that will tell you your Unknown Hardware Devices, you can find a good clean version to download at Major Geeks. Screen goes black after loading windows xp

Is it possible that it's display output is set to external screen, display no 2 from within the graphic cards settings/preferences. I cannot see how while in the GUI (XP Loaded) that making an adjustment not suitable for Laptops screen can take affect without XP sending out error messages. I really am curious now as to what the problem is or was, cheers.

My Dell Inspiron 6400 (Windows XP Home) won't reboot. It's giving me a "Loading PBR for descriptor 1 ... done" line on a black screen. What can I do to fix it. Can I salvage my content / files

Before you use the Recovery CD you need to backup your data because to restoring your laptop will wipe your data off the hard disk.
To backup your data when you cannot boot up your laptop, remove the hard drive and connect it to an USB hard drive adapter. Connect this hard drive/USB adapter into the USB port of a working computer. The computer will see it as an external storage device, you can then open the folders and backup your data.
You can then fit the hard drive back into the Dell laptop and boot up with the Dell recovery CD to reinstall Windows etc.

Wow what an oldie!
Unfortunately XP is no longer supported. This machine was designed for Win98 and 98SE. I expect there is a display driver missing, along with a few more perhaps.
Try loading 98SE and if it is OK, XP is your issue.

Starting problem

Immediately after seeing the Dell logo, keep tapping the 'F8' key,
until you see a "menu" (white text over a black background)
giving "startup" options for Windows XP.

Select "Safe Mode" and see if you can start in that mode.
Then, use "System Restore" to go "back" in time, to the most-recent checkpoint (date/time) where your computer _DID_ work.

Restore to that point, and restart.

Black screen

That means the Windows "Shell" or Explorer.exe is failing to load. You will have to wipe and reinstall your windows. If you have important data, I suggest you take your machine to a pc shop and have them attempt data recovery.

it sounds like your display backlight has gone bad. If your handy you can get a new display. If you are really good you can replace the back light.

Dell Inspiron 1525 - Dell Screen- Windows Boot Manger Screen

If it's XP:

You can try a chkdsk or do an XP repair: (your data will not be be erased)
Chkdsk
Take the Windows XP disk. Boot from it, then DO NOT select F2 (automated system recovery) but continue through the procedure until you get to the point where you can choose between installing Windows XP and entering the Recovery Console. Once you get into the Recovery Console, do chkdsk and fix potential errors on your disks! Chkdsk C: /R

XP repair
When you boot with the Win XP install CD-ROM, it loads a minimal operating system, similar to DOS, but compatible with Win XP. At the first screen you select install Win XP (not Recovery Console) and at the next screen it will find that you already have Win XP and offer to attempt a repair. This repair should not touch your Applications or data; it just reinstalls the Windows files. This is great because when it works you don't need to reinstall all your software.

If it is Vista, you would need to do a recovery.

If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.
Thanks, Joe

Hi,
You may be right , the harddrive on the system may have gone bad.
You can run a diagnostics on the hardrive, shut down the computer, and then Press the Fn+ power button at the same time , it would initate the diagnostics.

Do post the results back

Thanks

Try booting into safe mode by continually pressing the F8 key while the system is starting up..this should allow you to get into windows where you can try to reinstall your drivers. Most likely this is a driver issue with the video card or your refresh rate or display resolution is set too high.
