Why does my whirlpool refrigerator makes a very loud clunk noise when it turns off

Try looking for any pipes that are rattling against the cabinet , if not, I'm afraid compressor problem.

That sounds like a loose exhaust pipe or a metal cover plate underneath that has come loose.Check it out.

Bad Problem with solenoid valve.

If the valve noise is excessive, or more than it was originally, then yes, replace the valve.

If the noise is no worse than it was originally, then you may be overly sensitive to the noise its making.

Also, check that the valve has not shifted slightly in such a way that it's opening and closing rattles it against something that it didn't used to rattle against. A sheet metal panel will amplify the valve opening and closing.

Let me know what you find.
