Question about Garden

On my two stage snow blower--main auger stops turning .

I replaced the 3 belts on the machine but the main auger stops when I hit snow higher than a couple of inches. The secondary fan keeps up at top speed.. The machine is an MTD yard machine 8hp probably 15 years old. Any help possible appreciated.

Hi, I figured out the problem. The gear transfer case between the augers must be broke. The auger spins slowly until it hits snow and then stops-- The discharge fan continues to spin fast. I will try to get a local handyman to fix it or else but a new machine, this one must be at least 15-16 years old.
I thank you for your help, it is a great service. ojohn

How do I install brass bushings in a sproket bracket on QA-42A snow thrower for a cub cadet

Hello, How to replace the auger drive belts on a MTD,Yard Machine, and other two stage snow blower, that don't allow enough room to slide belts between the pulleys.
1.Tilt machine up on front end to remove the bottom frame cover, there should be six screws to remove, tilt back up right.
2.Remove the chute crank from the left handle and from the shoot.
3.Remove the black belt cover, there should be three screws.
4.Remove the support guide bracket, that the cable is running through, and remove cable end from idler pulley arm.(Note ,on some machines the pulley can be adjusted by loosing and move pulley towards the belt, than retighten.)
5.Remove belts from upper pulleys. (hint if there is a bolt holding the pulleys on it is easier to remove the bolt and slide the pulleys off to be able to remove the belts.)
6.Remove the six bolts and nuts holding the front half to the back half together, slide front part out to be able to remove old belts and install new belts. (hint make sure you get the new belt under the belt keeper on the bottom.)
7.Reassembly in reverse.
8.Set of two belts 0.312x34.75, part number 954-040B, $30.28

This first part is for replacing belts.
To remove the auger assembly completely follow these steps.
1.After removing the belts, and separating the two halves, remove the bolt holding the pulleys on,pay attention how bolt comes off and the way the washers are on be sure and put back on the way they come off.
2.Remove the pulleys and make note how they come off of the adapter pulley.remove pulley note how comes off.
3.Remove the bolts and nuts on the side of the housing.
4. Pull the auger out and place on work bench, making note how the end parts come off.
5.Remove the shear bolts to get and slide augers off, be sure and mark which way they turn as not put back on backwards.
6.You can access the auger gears by removing the bolts,to make repair.
7.also check the ball bearing in the rear housing where the auger shaft goes through to make sure it is not egg shape,if egg shaped needs replacing.will cause belts not to stay on and jump off the pulleys.
8.Check the end hex flange bearing (the plastic piece) to see if it is out of round,if is replace it.
9.Also you can download your manual if you don't have one depending on your model and number.and also you can check the shear pins in the augers if the above is not the problem.
hope this helps,,any comments welcome,thank you. @@

Enter your model number and you will get diagrams of this machine along with parts numbers. Be sure to use a craftsman belt for the repair. Joe

Thanks for choosing Fixya!

Snowblower doesn't throw the snow very far, and every time I stop it, it takes a while for the auger to start turning fast enough to blow the snow. Feels like the torque isn't there. This is a Husqvarna...

The most common cause of this is the drive belt is worn.
If you remove the cover (usually plastic) in the middle of the snow thrower and look at the belts.
Your operator's manual will show you how to remove the cover and check/change the belts.
The belt closest to the blower assembly drives the auger/blower and the belt closest to the engine drives the transmission.
With the engine not running, have someone depress the drive lever and check the blower belt.
You should only be able to depress the long side 1/2 inch or less. More than that the belt has stretched and needs to be replaced.
On some older blowers you can adjust the tension pulley, but most made in the last 15 years, you can't.
The belt may be frayed on the edges or glazed causing it to slip (it is shiny on the sides of the belt) It may be torn and broke completely.
You can get parts for you Craftsman and most Husqvarana, MTD made models through searspartsdirect.com. You can also get parts through jackssmallengines.com or your local dealer.
If you are unfamiliar with repairing machines take it to your local dealer. They will have a technician troubleshoot and repair the unit.
Feel free to ask any other questions to troubleshoot this problem farther. I know Snow Blowers. Please remember to rate this answer!

I have an Ariens 926LE snowblower. The blower spins but the auger spins slowly. It barely throws snow. Some times the auger stops spinning. Shear pins are fine.

Hi, The blower spins at full speed? If it does the belt, pulley, and shaft are good. Look at the shaft from the fan to the gear box while it's running and that shaft should be turning at the speed of the fan.
If the blower spins at full speed and the auger doesn't the most likely problem is the worm gear transmission from the blower shaft to the auger shaft.
A good way to visually inspect this is: With the machine turned off and the spark plug wire unhooked go to the front and try to rotate the auger by hand. If the gear box is good you will only be able to move the auger less than an inch. If the box is bad you will be able to move the auger a lot farther. While you are there recheck your shear pins.
You can also remove the blower drive belt and have someone turn the pulley by hand while you watch the auger. Put resistance on the auger with your gloved hand. If the box is good the auger will move smoothly in you hand. If it is bad, it will ****, move roughly, or stop.
While the other person is turning the pulley and you have some resistance on the auger look closely at the shaft running from the gearbox back to the blower. On some models there is a connecting sleeve and the roll pin that connects the sleeve to the shaft and gearbox will break.
If the gearbox is bad, it will have to be replaced as a complete unit.
Was this helpful? If you have any other questions, please ask.

My auger stops rotating with heavy snow loads. It sounds as tho a clutch is slipping. I tried to tighten up on the spring in the control cable, but that did not help. What do I adjust next?

Auger turning slow. Auger turns initially but auger stops turning when it hits the snow. Shear pins look ok, belt looks ok. Shear pins look intact. Could they be broken inside where I can't see.

sure sounds like a shear pin, usually one end will be missing if it is broke. They are simple to replace but get one that is rated for your machine to avoid damage. Can you turn it freely without the engine running?? if so, it's the shear pin
