Question about Office Equipment & Supplies

28 Answers

I have no communication between my computer and printer but when I re install the printer it says everything is working ok. I was on the phone with HP for about 2 days straight and it looked like we got the problem solved but then I was told to re start the computer and try to print something. It would start to print but after a few lines it was back to the same problem. Each page would come out with one line of all kinds of symbols and I would have to turn off the printer to get it to stop. I bought this printer in September and all was fine until I had a paper jam and since then it has been doing this. HELP

  • joshulz Dec 10, 2008

When I was on the phone with a tech from HP with remote assistance he checked out my computer and said I had the right driver but then he uninstalled and then had it reinstalled from the cd. I haven't changed anything on my computer in set up I don't want to fiddle with that in case something gets messed up so no I haven't changed anything but when he was doing things with remote assistance he could have.

  • joshulz Dec 10, 2008

How do I go about getting a replacement? The printer is only about 3 months. Do I just call them and tell them I want a replacement or do I have more things I have to do before they will replace it

  • joshulz Dec 11, 2008

I don't have another computer to hook it up to but now I am getting the message every time I log on that my computer found new hardware and I need to finish installing the software. So after that is done it still won't print

    HP Officejet Pro L7590

  • joshulz Dec 11, 2008

I have contacted HP and was on the phone with them forever it seems and they could not get it to work

  • joshulz Dec 12, 2008

I called them again yesterday and said I would like a replacement but they just shoved me off to another tech that did the same things as the other 2 techs before and I kept telling them we had already done all this but they will not listen! I just can't seem to get it to them that all has been tried before and nothing works! It's like talking to a brick wall. I'm at my wits end!!!

  • joshulz Dec 12, 2008

How do you get them to replace it short off holding them at gun point. They will not listen!!!!!

  • joshulz Dec 12, 2008

HP officejet L7590 I'm using windows XP service pack 3 The driver is the one that came with the printer software. All in english

Already checked for hardware changes with the HP techs

  • joshulz Dec 15, 2008

Already have done the reinstalling after deleting with the techs from HP

  • joshulz Dec 15, 2008

I can not stress enough that so far all the options suggested have been done many times over with the 3 separate techs from HP

  • joshulz Dec 15, 2008

The techs at HP have done all the was suggested even checking the driver version. I have emailed HP and got a response again asking me to tell them what the problem is. I am so disgusted I have told them the problem 3 different times and have the same ticket number every time. Why can't they just check the ticket number and see what the problem is

Hi Josh,

Normally I won't respond to a problem without product details. But in this case you supplied the key components of the problem.

Remember the Paper Jam? That was when all the trouble started right? After that pages of Hieroglyphics and trash characters, correct?

I'm confirming. Correct me if I'm wrong.

If this was the sequence of events, here is what happened.

  • After you cleared the paper jam, you most likely reset the printer to get rid of the error. Standard procedure.
  • The print job was still in the print queue.
  • It thinks the job has been started and tries to pick up where it left off.
  • When a computer talks to a printer, the first thing it does is send a string of control codes then the actual print data. When a printer is reset, those control codes are lost. Without them, the data sent by a resumed print job is unintelligible by the printer. Hence the trash data being printed.
The remedy:
Turn off the printer
Clear the print queue
Turn the printer back on.
Try to print the job again.

The idea is to purge all the data the printer has received (and is trying to act on) and at the same time get rid of any job that may have been partially sent that could be resumed. Both the queue and the printer must be clear. Then it will be ready to print properly

I thought I'd clarify some of the behind the scenes activity. The more you know, the easier it is to help you.

That will do it. Sometimes it really is simple.

Thanks for using FixYa!
Mike

My point was to ensure that both the print queue and the printer buffer were cleared at the same time. Both started clear. The result would have been immediate. Since you have done this, I must agree with my fellow techs that it must be a communication or internal error.

I know you are frustrated and inundated. I'm afraid getting a replacement is your best option.

I wish you the best of luck.

    Hi Josh,
Under the heading of, 'Never give up, Never Surrender', I have one more thing to try.
I know you've been using the USB port.
Does this printer have a Parallel Cable Connector?
Do you have a Parallel cable handy?

Try it, what do you have to lose? If the the problem was communication based. This changes the way it communicates.

My compliments on handling the numerous sources of data today.
Wish you the best of luck whatever you decide.

    Mike

First test a different USB cable, a bad connection cable can lose data in the middle of spooling process, and you get same problem.

You need to test the printer on a different computer (eg a laptop). Installing the driver software before connecting the printer.

If the printer still gives same problem (bad data in the middle of printing, that is a defective printer control board, and printer must be replaced.

To get a replacement, call the factory again, and tell them that you went through all necessary troubleshooting, and also have had consultancy by different technicians, and they told you the machine is defective.
They will probably ask you to do again all powercycling and driver reinstall troubleshooting before accepting.

Call them again, and complain strongly, telling that you have already done that with the spooler many times with the HP tech many times over the course of 3 separate 6 hour phone calls. And tell them that you also contacted an independent technician, and go straight for a refund or warranty covered repair this time.

  • Ginko
    Ginko Dec 15, 2008

Test the machine on different computer, if it works you may need to reinstall Windows on first computer.

if it does not wark call HP and tell them that this is not a driver problem, tell them about the 3 separate 6 hour phone calls, about auth tech consultancy, and tell them that you test the printer on a different PC.

If it does not work on a different computer, the printer has probably a faulty control board, or a defective usb connection, and must be repaired.

  • Ginko
    Ginko Dec 15, 2008

The problem with HP is that it will be picked up each time from a different person, and first line supports cannot authorize a replacement, ask to talk or communicate with a supervisor or a second line, and get a bit upset.
Test the printer on a different computer first.

  • Ginko
    Ginko Dec 15, 2008

That is your choice, at a computer store you will be charged for inspection or repair while you are still entitled to warranty.

If the HP tech support cannot fix it you do not even need a new computer, just insist to get the problem fixed.

Since you have a USB printer, you must plug it into a USB port for it to work.
If you have no other USB ports available on your computer, you can install a USB hub, which will handle multiple USB devices...

or follow the instructions in the following link..good luck..

When you copy a document on the scanning glass, does it copy correctly? If so, this would rule out a large number of potential hardware problems, and point back towards the drivers and operating system. (Which OS are you using..?)

Hi Joshulz,

I have worked on hundreds of these and alot of the time the logic board or main board if you will, goes bad. It cannot decode the info from the PC so it prints what you see. If it is still in warranty you will need to exchange through HP if not they still may be able to exchange it at a small cost to you.

Another option if it is not in warranty is to go to Best Buy and purchase a new one and get the extended plan on it. It covers that unit for 3years and would get you that same replacement for free. The plan only cost 30 and its well worth it. I always buy it from best buy and i used them most of the time.

You call 1800hpinvent and tell them that you have spent 2hours on the phone with tech support and cannot get your printer working and you want a replacement unit under the warranty. They will send you a refurb unit and a prepaid label to send you printer back. They shouldn't give you a hard time, however i do have trouble with them from time to time.

  • Joe Lepe Dec 15, 2008

If they are not letting you exchange it bring it to Best Buy. They have a contract with HP and this model is an exchange unit. It will be a 3 week turn time but you will have a new printer.

To solve this problem, we'll need to know the model of HP printer you have. It is generally either on the front or top of the printer.

Hi,
If you have spent 2 hours with the HP support , you might have tried everthing there is in the book. The only step that would confirm , if this is a printer problem or your computer problem is by installing this printer on different computer. If it works there problem is with the computers operating system . If doesnot print there aswell , hate to say this you might need to get a new printer, as HP does service printers .

Thanks

    HI,

As i have requested you earlier , just test this printer with some other system , if the same doesnot work , as its just three month old printer tell them to replace it. If the printer starts workinf with another computer , then the problem can be caused because of corrupt windows files.

This would be the only solution to pinpoint the cause of failure , otherewise we end up beating around the bush, as you have already spent a lot of your precious time over the phone with HP.

    Thanks

space is available on the hard drive. Approximately 32 megabytes (MB)
of free disk space is needed to print a simple text-only document.

    5. If there is less than 32 megabytes (MB) free, then delete unnecessary
files on the disk drive until you have enough disk space free.
Documents with graphics require more free disk space, so delete as many
files as you safely can. If you are not sure how to delete files or
which files you can delete safely, get help from a computer technician.

    6. Try to print a document. If the problem continues, try the next steps below.

Step ten: Disconnect other peripheral devices

    1. If the printer is connected to a scanner or other device, disconnect the printer from the device.

    2. Connect the printer directly to the computer.

    3. Try to print a document. If the problem continues, try the next steps below.

    Step eleven: Reinstall the driver

    1. Reinstall the driver using the CD that came shipped with the printer.
If you do not have the CD that came shipped with the printer, you can
download a driver from HP’s Web site.

    2. Try to print a document. If the problem continues, try the next steps below.

Step twelve: Test with a different cable

    1. Disconnect the printer cable from the computer and the printer.

    2. Connect a new printer cable to the printer and the computer.

    3. Try to print a document. If the problem continues, try the next steps below.

Step thirteen: Test from a different computer (if possible)

    1. If you have access to another computer that has your printer’s driver installed, then disconnect the printer from the computer.

    2. Connect the printer to another computer.

    3. Try printing from the other computer.

    4. If you can print from the other computer, then you have your computer
serviced. Take the printer in too and ask the technician to reinstall
the printer driver and ensure that you can print from all software on
      the computer.

Step fourteen: Reinstall the printer port

    If
none of the steps above resolve the problem, then the computer may not
be able to identify the printer connection. You may need to reinstall
the printer port. The instructions for doing this vary from system to
system. It is best ask a computer technician or support agent to check
the system and reinstall the correct port for you if necessary.

The printer is warrenty for one year.

if you brought the printer near by, then I suggest you take it back tot he store and exchange it. if you mail order it, then you have to call HP (check your user manual, last couple of page). give them the e-mail troubleshooting log (you should have that, Hp usually give you a confirmation for trobleshooting).

if you can not get the customer support people to exchange it, you have to insist to talk to the supervisor. then explain to him/her what the problem is.

they should be able to exchange it if you insist they do.

P.S. I have my laptop xechanged twice in three years, so I know they will. you have push them.

good luck! and let me know what is the out come.

Hi,

Its the "type" of printerdriver you use.

But - it would help a lot to know exactly witch printer we have here, and the exact driver you are installing, - and, to be just a bit anoing, have you tamberd with the setup?

I AM SURE its a software problem, - have had the same in many cases at work, and I come to think about WHAT it is you print, as some homepages can do this.

Have you tried to print a testpage from the printer setup?

Have you tried to print a Word dokument?

    - NOT while the printer is mucking about, but when is trough printing you giburich.

Will be back for solutions, I need to go through all my old memery bank (stack of paper with "What I did") :-)

My Lexmark Z1420 Is not communicating with the P.C. Have checked everything and it tells me it cannot communicate with printer. The printer works with other P.C.

If its a Windows PC, you need to unplug the printer, Boot the computer in the Safe Mode, and remove the drivers (with the Device Manager). You might find duplicates. Remove them all.
Then reboot and install the drivers again, following the directions on the driver installer. Windows needs these extra steps.

Computer says there is no communication with the printer

Couple of things to consider and try,,,have you tried another USB device in the computer, like a flash drive? If it can read the flash drive ok then the problem is not the USB port. Try using a different USB cable for the printer. Make sure your computer is up to date with the most current drivers. To me it sounds like a bad printer cable. Another thing to try is having the printer attached and when the error message comes up try wiggling the cable to see if communication is restored. If so then chances are that the printer cable is bad. Hope this helps.

Ok, I presume you are using a parallel printer, what you have to do, is go into the BIOS, SETUP, and find the Printer Port, LPT1, and set the port to bi-directional, or SPP, now save, and reboot. Now reinstall again, and it should work. ( It may just work anyway, after reboot, that may be worth a try first)

Communication problem printer lexmark2600

With the Lexmark printers communication subsystem you MUST let the driver ask for you to plug in the printer. DO NOT plug the printer into the USB port until told to do so.

To fix a fouled install:
(1) Uninstall the Lexmark drivers in Add Remove Programs
(2) Shutdown the computer
(3) Disconnect the printer from the USB port
(4) Restart the computer
(5) Run the Driver Installation software
(6) Cancel ALL attempts by windows to auto install the printer
(7) When the software asks for the printer connect it and continue

Zebra LP 2844 parallel communication problem

The printer is installed on the PC using a specific port. If it's installed on the USB port, it won't work on the parallel port. Do you have this printer installed 3 different times? Need more details such as how was it installed the first time? And if it's working on the other 2 ports, why does it have to work on the parallel?
