Question about Whirlpool GH7145XF Microwave Oven

Open Question

Whirlpool self cleaning oven overheating and lock

My Whirlpool oven RBS305PQ9 put itself on a self cleaning cycle after I selected the bake at 350degree option. A service provider came out to fix it - replacing the thermostat. 3 weeks later the oven did the same thing, but this time the door closed. I got the previous service provider out, who used a coat hanger to open the door. when the oven locked an error message appeared but I did not really take notice of it. The service provider now wants to replace the board at $350 (previous work was $307. Any help would be appreciated.

    The
first thing I would suggest is a hard reset. Unplug the unit for a
minute or so. Then plug it back in, set the clock and try again.

    If that doesn't work,
leave it unplugged for maybe an hour. Then let us know if the hard
    reset does not fix it.

Is it possible that some spray cleaner accidentally got into the controls?

I always recommend that users spray the cleaner on a soft cloth (not on the keypad itself) then wipe the control panel off.

Also, I always recommend non-ammonia cleaners since ammonia can crack and damage plastic.

Otherwise, the spray can get into the controls and lock it up or make it act odd.

Another thing that can cause this is steam or grease / smoke getting in the controls. The best way to prevent this is to be sure your hood exhaust fan is on whenever you cook on the stove top.

If it does not dry out over time, it may need to be manually dried or blown out.

I've followed up to your by e-mail address to be sure I help you fully.

Generally, the most common causes of a failure to heat are:

- bad door switches or door switch mounts
- loose connection at the magnetron
- problem or loose connection on the control unit circuit board
- bad magnetron or other high voltage part (such as a shorted diode)

If you or someone you know decide to look into it, we have critical safety information, info on door switch diagnosis and replacement, and disassembly information at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk

You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here: http://tinyurl.com/gv383

There should also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel, which is very helpful when troubleshooting.

I recommend that you do not remove the door or hinges to do the job because if it's not aligned exactly, you can have microwave leakage.

Normally you have to separate the door panels (as shown in the attached photo) and then you'll see the screws you need to remove.

Normally you have to separate the door panels (as shown in the attached photo) and then you'll see the previously hidden screws you need to remove.

Or you can watch a YouTube video (not a video I made) here that demonstrates how it's done.

There should also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting & testing.

You may have a bad control board. Have you tried unplugging the oven and then reapplying poqwer afterwards? Manytimes , when elcetronic control logic gets corrupt, a power down/up reset clears the problem. If it continues, I would consider replacing the control board..Here is a link to the circuit board you might consider replacing.. http://www.repairclinic.com/SmartSearch/SSPartDetail.aspx?PartID=1059895&PPStack=1

These kind of things are generally trial and error and there is no guarantee that this will be the solution to your specific problem..

Hope this helps...

Hi Carol Eggers, thank you for your inquiry!

I understand that your wall oven is not allowing you to perform self-clean after you replaced your bake element. It sounds like it could be an issue within the control panel or sensor inside of your oven. I would recommend having a professional come out to properly diagnose your appliance. -Matt

How to use a self clean magic chef oven bought 24 years ago

Self Clean Magic Chef Ovens, clean by Nuking the baked on grime etc... As I recall, invoking the self clean (some models will allow you to specify a time - 2 hours for light cleaning to 4 hours for heavy), will ramp the oven temperature up to as high as 900 degrees F (as opposed to the mid 300 norm). YOu probably want to remove any racks etc before hand, and wipe up crumbs etc...

Once completed, and cooled, wipe out the ash that is left over, witha damp cloth.

Hi, Look at the home breaker box or fuse box to check for a tripped breaker or blown fuse. If your oven is not heating because there is no power, you may need to replace a fuse or reset a breaker. Also check the power outlet to confirm that the oven is plugged into the outlet securely.

Press the "START/ENTER" button to get the oven to heat after selecting your temperature, if you cannot get it to heat. If you do not press this button within five minutes of setting the temperature, the oven heating cycle will automatically be canceled and the oven control panel will return to displaying the sign.

Calibrate the temperature setting on the oven if it is not heating at a temperature that you like. Do this by holding down the "BAKE" button until the current calibration setting appears, which will be a temperature followed by "CAL." Use the up and down arrow button to increase the temperature and press the "START/ENTER" button once you are done. You can increase in five degree increments up to an additional 35 degrees.

Call the Whirlpool customer interaction center at 800-253-1301 if your troubleshooting fails to fix your heating problem. The customer service representative can give you contact details for a local service technician so that you can have the oven looked at by a professional.

Hope it helped

How do I use the self-cleaning function on my Whirlpool Super Capacity 465 self-cleaning oven?

If you just want to run the basic self-clean cycle. First remove the broiler pan and racks from the oven. Next clean any heavy spills up with a non-abrasive cleaner (do not use an oven cleaner). Clean the window of the oven door and the door frame (to the outside of the gasket). Then close the oven. If the oven has a touch-pad, press the Auto-clean pad on the oven followed by Start. The oven will automatically lock and then unlock when the oven has cooled after the cleaning cycle. (I'm less certain of the control settings for the dial type of oven control.)

In order to get your manual you need the full model number of the oven. This is on a plate located behind the storage door. This pdf, http://adcxns1.whirlpool.com/Service/SrvTechAdm.nsf/2cd44500d572193285256a45004fd9d6/ca8e028c60d9804f85256a8c00621f04/$FILE/4322089.pdf , gives you a picture of where the model and serial numbers are is on page 4 as well as some of the information contained in the serial number on the subsequent pages.

Once you have your model number, go to http://shared.whirlpoolcorp.com/product_literature/search.jsp?siteCd=WHRCOM and enter the model number. This should let you get the manual specific to your oven.

I hope this helps.

No Power to Jenn-Air Microwave JMC8130DDS

I just had the same problem. Our unit is about 5 years old. I was running the self-cleaning mode, and put something to heat in the microwave. It heated at first, then all power to microwave went out. I read the above description and we pulled the entire unit out, and there was a reset switch on top of the oven. Pushed it and the microwave was back in business. I would have been very upset if I had called a service man and he spent 5 minutes, just as we did, to pull it out and reset the circuit. We turned all power off prior to pulling out the unit. It seems JennAir should admit this is an innate design flaw and offer some sort of compensation or come up with a repair kit to fix this issue....
