Question about Dell OptiPlex GX150 PC Desktop

2 Answers

I own a Dell Optiplex GX150. I am trying to access the system partition that will allow me to restore back to my factory settings. This computer was purchased back around 2001 and did not arrive with any "CD's". My issue is that I have too much junk filling up my computer and need to erase my hard drive without erasing my system files that it needs to operate. As I don't have the CD to restore Windows XP this is a severe problem I am encountering. I read that restarting the computer and pressing Ctrl + F11 would access that partition and allow me to revert to these factory settings. I tried it but it didn't do anything. How do I restore my Dell Optiplex GX150's factory settings without erasing my necessary system files that it needs to operate? Please help.

OK, there is a possible way to solve your problem without having to contact Dell. Also Dell does not Supply Backup Copies of Restore Discs, and especially due to your machine being So Old, there was less chance of that happening anyway. (Probably explains why your Machine is not listed as being supported for Windows XP on their Homepage),
So what you'll need to do is download something that will atleast allow you enter into DOS Mode. You can achieve this by using something like Active @ Bootdisk. Download that, burn it to Disc, then get into DOS.

Now, the Dell System Recovery is stored on most PC's in a Norton Ghost Image File. To Manually recover this, you need to follow this step by step guide that also includes pics of how to do it.

Looks like a lot of messing about, but without loosing all your files and having to format the machine to get a new operating system on there, then that's what needs to be done.

    Hope this helps :-).

Contact Dell technical support to get the CD read the partition on your hard drive to restore to factory settings. It won't be able to work without one since it has to boot from the CD in order to get it to work.

This is from the Dell support site. You were correct in pressing ctrl+f11 but perhaps you did not press at the correct time. If in following these first two steps you do not get the recovery console, it may not have been installed on your computer.

1 Turn on the computer.
2 When the Dell splash screen appears during the computer startup process, press and hold <Ctrl> and then press <F11>. Then, release both keys at the same time.
3 In the Dell PC Restore by Symantec window, click Restore. Alternatively, press <Tab> to highlight Restore, and then press <Enter>.
4 When a warning message appears stating that all data will be lost, click Confirm, or press <Tab> to highlight Confirm and then press <Enter>.

The Progress window will appear. Once the restore process starts, Dell PC Restore by Symantec usually takes about 8 to 10 minutes to finish.

When the restore process is complete, the following message will appear:
The system recovery process was successful.
5 Click Finish or press <Tab> to highlight Finish and then press <Enter> to restart the computer.
The software is now installed as it was when the computer was first received.

Bios or windows? If bios, go into bios by pressing delete key at computer boot up. Then go to last tab and look for load default settings. If you are referring to your operating system. Use your recovery disk or partition and reinstall the operating system. Or you can try Control Panel\Backup and Restore Center

Dell system restore

Depending on the operating system, most of the time it is located in the start menu, programs, accessories, then system tools. Restore is a process that takes the computer back to a specific date and time called a checkpoint. Reformat is a process by erasing the entire hard drive and re installing the version of windows you are running.
