That means that you know your calc crashed. This can be caused by taking out the batteries durring running time, happened just randomly. Well nothing to fear just press clear and it should go away but if it stays on that screen you have problems and is best to try some of these methods. Take out all the bateries and press and hold the on button for 30 seconds. Put the batteries back in and it should have reset. Warning you should archive everything incase this happens. To archive go to 2nd mem and hit enter to put a astrick next to the app (meaning archived)

SOURCE: my TI-83 plus calculator doesn't work

As battery gets drained, the screen contrast dims. But when you change batteries, some times the contrast is reset to some low value and the screen appears dead: it is so light that you do not see anything, and you think the calculator is malfunctioning. This is the most frequent reason users think the calculator refuses to turn ON. And I hope that is the case now.
To correct that, you must increase screen contrast: draken the screen a bit. To do so

  1. press [2nd] key and release it.
  2. Press the Up arrow and HOLD pressure.
  3. Keep pressing the arrow key until screen is dark enough.
If that solve your problem that is good, rate the post accordingly.. If that does not, do not get irate and berate the post. Post a comment here describing what you did and what message (if any) calculator returned, and I will give you further diagnostic steps.

The on button on my ti-83 is working but that is the only button working as far as I can tell because the screen stays blank

TI calculators have an annoying habit of dimming the screen when the batteries are changed so that it appears as if the calculator isn't turning on. Turn the calculator on (or at least press the ON key). Press and release the 2ND key. Press and hold the Up-arrow key for a few seconds and see whether the screen becomes legible. Does it?

Calculator freezing and shutting off

I see that you have an earlier version of the OS. You should update it to version 1.19 available at Click the dowloads >> Apps and software menu.
The most likely reason for the RAM cleared is a depleted backup battery.

You might want to solve the problem and the update all at one go.
Check this article in the TI FAQ and Knowledge base for the procedure. The article contains an internal link to the OS Installation procedure.

Before you start on this journey, make sure the batteries (main and backup) are in a good state. Many OS installation failures happen because of quasi-depleted batteries.

Hope it helps.

TI-83 Calculator RAM cleared

To clear the message press [CLEAR]
If calculator shows message after you turn it [ON], it may be due to drained backup battery. If you have to change it make sure you have main batteries in and in good state, and installed.

If calculator appears frozen, press [2nd] [QUIT] to interrupt what it is doing.

I see you do not have the latest ROM (OS). You should download the latest ROM (1.19) and install it.

Use the link to download the TIConnect software. Install it on your computer. Run the TIConnect software. Connect the calculator to a computer (USB cable or TISilverLink cable or TI Graphlink black cable). Press the ON button, do not worry if you do not see anything on screen (contrast may be too light).
In TIConnect main window, click the TI Device info button. The software will try to detect the calculator. If the answer is NOT FOUND on any of the ports, click the communication settings at the bottom of the window.
Select Device: enter you calculator model
Select Cable: SilverLink, USB,
Select port : USB1 or COMx
and click OK. The TI connect software will give you some messages if communications with calculator cannot be established.

If you establish communications with the calculator, press the Update button in TIConnect main window. Install OS directly to the calculator. You may update other installed applications.
If you cannot communicate with calculator with the computer try to update by cal-to-calc connection with a working calculator/

Hope it helps.

RAM Cleared

This is kinda a weird situation. Because it's usually the other way around. Your ram will clear if your calculator is frozen. So take out all 5 batteries from the back. Even the back up battery. Then reset it again. 2nd then + then 7 then 1 Then 2. Good luck.
