Question about GE Spacemaker JVM1640SJ Microwave Oven

GE Profile Spacemaker Microwave - won't heat

I have a GE Profile Spacemaker JVM1660SB 001 microwave. Manufactured April 1999.

It suddenly stopped heating today. The light comes on, the turntable turns, but it does make a a different humming noise from it's usual sound and it doesn't heat the food. I thought I might have smelled a slight electrical smell when I opened it (I had been trying to reheat oatmeal for 2 minutes), but I'm not sure. Now I'm afraid to try it again since I have a young child.

Any advice will be much appreciated! I did not expect to have to buy another microwave as my "Christmas" present! Thanks!

Wow, thank you for your informative reply! I thought it might be the magnetron based on prior FixYa posts, but I think I'll try replacing the diode first just in case I can save the $150+ GE repair and labor charge for the magnetron.

This is my first post on your site, and I'm really impressed. Thanks, FixYa!!

I have the same problem. What is a diode, and how can you fix it?

Question about Spacemaker, Model # JVM185OBH06
This may be the same problem as above. . . I made some microwave popcorn yesterday with no problem at all. In fact, we've never had a problem with our microwave (it is about 3 years old, it was first installed about 2 1/2 years ago). Then, about an hour after the popcorn, we tried to defrost something frozen. The minute we pressed "START" we knew something was wrong. The microwave made a loud, low, continuous noise along with its usual noises. It just didn't sound right. The light went on, and the turntable went around, but that noise! So after 30 seconds or so, we turned it off--and the food was still frozen completely solid--no warming or thawing at all. What could it be?

Thanks for making your post very detailed and including the model number. That really helps! :)

With the symptoms you have, I would most strongly suspect a shorted high voltage rectifier diode or a bad magnetron.

The diode is a fairly easy & cheap do-it-yourself fix, and the mag will cost more.

If you or someone you know decide to look into it, we have critical safety information and disassembly information at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa.

There should be a "mini-manual" (tech sheet) hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting, testing, and locating components.

At our Web site, we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

Here are some links you or someone you know can use for test help, but read their safety warnings first:

http://www.gallawa.com/microtech/diode.html (if it's not shorted, it's probably okay)

http://www.gallawa.com/microtech/mag_test.html

http://www.gallawa.com/microtech/xformer.html

You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

We're happy to help you with free advice and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

I would suggest testing it before you replace it.

If it;s not shorted, it's probably okay.

okay thats sounds like you have to take your microwave to a repair man.the HV capacitor can be open or the magnetron is bad these 2 components i mention are responsible for the heating of your microwave if they go bad..then your microwave wont heat.good luck.

GE SpaceMaker Microwave suddenly stops while heating

I had same problem last week. My GE JVM1650 Spacemaker stopped after a few seconds of heating. Owned 16 months, manufactured Jan 2005. It was the magnetron, which was replaced yesterday. The magnetron has a 10-year warranty, but I had to pay $161.00 for labor by a GE technician. The call-out fee was waived at my request. I don't know what that amount would have been, but I can't believe the $161.00 for what was about 1/2 hour labor once diagnosed. Good Luck!
