I have aMicromark MM9533 7day electronic timer (could be quite old), but cannot set it because I have lost my instructions. I can set the time ok, but when I try to set each day's on/off times, it...

There are eight timer on/off events, you set each of the on and off time pairs for a particular day of the week or combination of days. If it is that old, mine was bought in 1999 and just rediscovered, you should change the button battery found under the screw panel. The timer doesn't work the way you seem to be describing.

Had to change battery. Since I did this the day will scroll several times and will not let me set the day, nor the time, nor the mode. Is my unit toast ?? As it was working till I changed the battery.

Most digital timers suggest resetting as last-step effort to restore functionality.
This particular timer is reset by removing battery.
Try removing battery again. Otherwise it seems the timer has gone bad.
HB88RC is discontinued product.
Replacement is heavy-duty Intermatic HB800RCL 2-outlet or HB800RCH 1-outlet timer.

Have the timer set on Auto but lights are not on during the ON period. Also do I need to set times for all 7 periods?

No, you do not need to set all 7 timer events.
When event1 ON and event1 OFF are set, press CLOCK button to exit programming and save programs. Or press PROGRAM button and move to event2 ON and event2 OFF. Exit programming any time by pressing clock button.
http://www.intermatic.com/products/timers/consumer%20outdoor%20timers/digital%20timers/hb88rc.aspx

That being said, if events conflict with each other, timer will not operate.
For example event1 ON FR at 7pm and event1 OFF all-days at 11pm.
The days have to match for on-off times.

Another example event1 ON FR at 7pm and event1 OFF FR 11pm, but event2 ON all days 8pm event2 OFF all days 10pm. This overlap will cause timer to skip programs.

If timer is being used in random mode, timer programs cannot be closer than 1/2 hour apart.

When programming is done, press clock button to display current time.
Timer should be ready to go.
Manual is fuzzy at this point, and does not specifically say, but it appears that you only press MODE button when you want to set another mode beside auto.
I e-mailed Intermatic last week about this unclear spot because several folks are writing in about this timer not going into correct MODE after programs are set.
MODE must be set to automatic
Press MODE button once for manual override function
Press MODE again and RDM displays for random >> this is for lights turning on randomly when on vacation.
Press MODE button third time, and AUTO shows on display >> you want timer in AUTO for timer programs to operate.
Here's the trick ... after setting MODE to auto, press clock button to display current time

If timer will not enter AUTO, then timer is defective.
If Intermatic sends response that is pertinent to your question, I will post again on this thread.
Add a comment any time, and I will respond.

How do I set it and can I use it indoors?

I see nothing in the manual that says 'outdoor use only' EXCEPT timer runs on photoelectric eye.
Timer turns ON automatically at dusk, so if timer is inside, and indoor lights are ON, then timer stays OFF.

To use timer outdoors.
Plug timer into wall.
Timer turns ON automaically at Dusk.
Rotate dial to set how long timer will stay ON.
Set timer to turn OFF 2 4 6 8 Hours after dusk
Set timer to turn off at dawn
Set timer to ON so lights are ON full time
Set timer to OFF so lights are off full time.

Just program it as noted previously and put the timer in Auto. Set the clock to 1 min BEFORE your earliest timer program is set to come on. When the clock hits the correct time, it will turn on. Then set the clock to the correct time and you're golden.

How do you set this to go on at a certain time and off at a certain time for the whole week.

The ST01C timer has 40 available programs.
You are going to use 1 program.
First, you set program1 ON time
And then set the days-of-the-week to ALL
Next, you set program1 OFF time
And set the days-of-the-week to ALL

The days for the ON and days for the OFF have to be the same.
The timer gives you choices of M-F -or- WDK weekdays -or- ALL for all 7 days

The steps are shown in section 6 of the manual
http://waterheatertimer.org/Intermatic-st01c.pdf

The following page has large easy-to-read ST01C instructions:
Set ON-OFF times is shown in step 4
http://waterheatertimer.org/ST01C-program.html

The important thing is that both the ON and OFF times have days set to ALL
