The second line has no dial tone when plugged in, however checked the phone line with a different phone and it's fine so not sure why it's not working the first line has no problem. When phone cord is plugged in the screen says L2 extension in use. Any suggestions or should we just buy a new phone system

Re: Second line not working
The phone will show that "line in use" message when it's not connected correctly.
If your two phone lines come in to one jack, make sure you are using a 4-wire line cord connected to the "line 1 and line 2" jack on the phone. You may be using a 2-wire cord so the second line isn't reaching the phone.
If the two lines are on separate jacks you need to connect line 2 to the separate "line 2" jack.
If you know for a fact that both lines are properly connected to the phone and it still doesn't see the second line, then it's time for a new phone.

try changing phone to tone dialing . one phone line has been setup for Decadic dialing and the other line may be setup for tone dialing.
If tone dialing is working on one line but not the other then get phone company to change the dialing type on the phone line.
Dual tone multi frequency is the technical name for tone dialing and is more efficient than decadic dialing or pulse dialing.
First, try to check every telephone line is properly plugged into its phone jack. If you have a problem with just one phone, plug a different phone into that jack. If the second phone works, the problem lies in the first phone.
Then unplug each phone and answering machine in your house, one at a time. Wait 30 seconds after unplugging the first device. Pick up another phone to see if there's a dial tone -- if there is, then the first phone may be faulty. If not, continue unplugging phones in the same way and check for dial tone. If you find a phone that doesn't work, plug all your other phones back in and see if they work properly. The faulty phone should be replaced.
or disconnect the plug from the test jack inside the exterior box. This disconnects your inside wiring from phone company's line. If you have more than one line, select the test jack for the line that is causing the problem. Plug your phone into the jack; this plugs you directly into the phone company's line. If you have a cable modem, plug the phone directly into the jack on the modem.
Then pick up the phone receiver to see if there's a dial tone. If there's no dial tone, the problem is with your outside wiring. If there is a dial tone, the trouble is caused by your inside wiring, equipment or jacks.
If you are getting "no dial tone" as an error on your fax machine, it means that you have the telephone cord plugged into the wrong port on it.
Turn the printer around so that you can see the back of it. If you look closely, there should be three ports to choose from in which you connect a telephone cord. Sometimes they put a little white plastic piece in the ports to keep them clean during shipping ect. If this is the case, go ahead and remove them now.
If you look closely at each port , you might notice that they have text or pictures right above or below them to tell you which one to use. let me explain; if you have one telephone line and wish to use it for both fax and voice calls - you will need more than one port. That's why they mark them.
One of the ports should say "line" or have a picture with a funny little symbol on it. This is the port that you would use if you want to fax someone using your printer. You plug your phone cord into this port on your printer.

This port is used when you want to share a single phone line with both your fax machine and telephone used for making voice calls. To split your line between both fax and phone, you plug your phone cord from the wall into the port marked "line" and take a second phone cord and plug it into the port on your printer marked "phone" and the other end of that line goes into your telephone (voice line).
The last port should say "line 2" or similar and usually has no picture next to it. This is an additonal port to share with a second phone line.
To correct your problem of "no dial tone", plug your phone cord into the socket on the wall and put the other end into the port on the printer that says "line". Now lets test the connection.
Put a piece of paper into your printer, press the fax button and dial any phone number using 1 and then the area code followed by the phone number and press 'start" or "ok" to begin the fax. If you have chosen the right port to connect your telephone cord, you will hear a dial tone first, and then dialing of the numbers you chose. If you cannot hear a dial tone before your numbers begin, then you have not chosen the right port. If this is the case, remove the phone cord from the port you have chosen and try another until you do hear the dial tone.
Do not try to go from your phone jack into your telephone and then use a second port on your telephone to connect a second phone cord that is plugged into your printer/fax. A second phone port on your telephone is most likely for a second phone line to use for voice calls. The majority of phones for residential use do not have a built in splitter that works like a fax/printer does. If you try to use a second port on your phone to split to your fax machine, it usually will not work. Follow the instructions as listed above to re-route your line and correct the problem.
MAGIC JACK USERS:
While magic jack is great for making free long distance calls, it is not suggested for use with a fax machine. if your trying to use your magic jack phone line to fax it usually does not work.
If you are not getting a dial tone then something is holding the line off hook. Disconnect any other device you have on your lines and check to see if you get your dial tone back. If you still have no dial tone unplug each phone and check again. You may have to disconnect everything for a minute or two so the phone company will reset its equipment. Plug in your phones one at a time and check your dial tone every time you add something new.
If you add something and you loose your dial tone immediately you may have a crossed connection in the wall socket, any splitters or in the phone plug. Check to make sure all of the wires in those sockets are straight before you plug in your phone wire.
If you add your CC machine and everything is good but it fails after you run a transaction you will have to contact the supplier of your CC machine. It is not hanging up the line.
There are two possible answers to this problem. The first thing is to check on the cordless phones, is a 2 way switch, one setting is for DP=Dial pulse (setting for old rotary phones) 2nd setting is TT= Touch Tone. I would guess that the setting should be set to TT on both cordless phones for touchtone.
Second thing to do is to plug in the base unit of your cordless phone to a jack that currently has a landline phone plugged into it that works and test again. If cordless phone works OK then go back to the original jack that didn't work and reverse the wires in the jack: that is what is known as a "polarity" issue.
Check the phone line with a basic old phone plug it into the fax line do you get a good dial tone, and no noise on line. Also check the phone line call ATT and have them check the number move the fax machine to different plug. power off the wait tens second power on. check the phone line connector.
