Question about Canon Cameras

1 Answer

I bought a Canon 40D from Amazon--through Ace Digital Photo--in a kit with a 17-85mm lens, presumably new. I replaced it recently with the 50D. Now I learn that the camera, which was never outside my home and has about 100 activations was used--quite a lot of use and significant dust on the sensor. I was cheated, obviously. I can see the dust myself and a camera shop told me the camera was used extensively. Well, I am pretty disappointed. The purchase date was around 08/01/2008 and I still have the receipt, the box and the gear (plus a lot of other stuff I bought for the camera). Do you have any suggestions for me? Intended to sell this kit and buy the 5D Mk II, but I don't think I should sell it in this condition. Either you shipped Ace a used camera, or Ace shipped me a used camera. I paid almost $1400 for the kit.

This is not a Canon web site. But I seriously doubt that Canon would send used cameras to its dealers -- where would they get them? More likely one of Ace's former customers returned the camera and Ace re-sold it as new. Your unfortunate situation is one of the best arguments for dealing with a local retailer where you can deal personally with a store manager in a situation like this. There are some very reputable online retailers, but watch out for the unscrupulous ones. If you check resellerratings.com for Ace Digital Photo at this link, you'll see they have a pretty good lifetime rating of 8.08 (out of 10), but their recent reviews are in the basement. New management?

Thanks for the glowing rating the information I provided. It's one reason I usually avoid answering questions when I know that the answer is something the questioner doesn't want to hear. Apparently others feel the same way, as you'll note that most of the unanswered questions involve telling the asker that their equipment is broken. You've reinforced my personal policy.

Serial number

With newer Canons you have to run a software program to "initialize" the board when you replace it. The board comes blank, and you have to add the program and settings to run the camera. The software also allows you to replace the serial numbers, do exposure and auto focus adjustments etc. Canon does not sell this proprietary software. You would have to send the camera to Canon and they would charge you the set repair price. Wish I had better news. But try adding the latest firmware. I am not sure if the 40D is the cutoff for this or it started with the 50D. You have to do this with all current Canon models.

Almost all early Quantaray lenses (and Sigma lenses, Sigma made Quantaray) in the Canon EOS mount will show error messages on Canon digital cameras (but still work fine on older EOS film cameras). usually err99 but err01 also. There is no DIY fix and Sigma ran out of update parts years ago. Current production lenses and Canon made lenses will not have this problem. This lens would only work for someone shooting EOS film cameras with no intention of "upgrading" their system to digital Canon cameras in the future.

Hi, Unfortunately having a shutter replaced, when sending the camera off to Canon takes 8-12 weeks in my experience.

Error message communication between camera and lens is faulty

Your flex cable to the Iris is broken. Have a look at my gallery at http://www.pbase.com/barry_2718/efs1785mm I have the same symptoms. At 28 or 35mm it make work ok. try Av mode and f8 aperture to see if you get an err01 because the aperture does not move either. Sound like you may have been sold a dead lens I am afraid to say. There are lots of reports about this lens failing after 2 to 3 years of use.

Digital Camera Purchase

Here is a page that compares the Canon 40D and 50D side by side

Because the 50D is the newer model it is quite a bit more expensive than the 40D. However, the reviews don't find that the quality has improved very much. Unless the 50D has a feature you simply must have, the 40D is going to be a much better value.

Neither has video capabilities. If you want the best video capabilities as well as top-quality still photos, without spending tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars, take a look at the 5D Mark II. This camera has amazing video capabilities for the price (under $3k). Most camera stores have a long waiting list so if you want this model you will have to put your name on a list and wait at least a few weeks before you get your camera.

Hi all, I wonder if you can supply some advice regarding a Sigma17-35mm lens I purchased earlier in the year. Basically if I use the automatic or 'P' setting on my Canon EOS 30D camera the image is over...

Try your EOS in AV (aprature value) mode. You should be able to adjust your aperature value in 1/3 or 1/2 steps dependind how you have your Custom Functions set in your camera's menu. Possibly the lens you purchased is for an EOS 35mm. If you use a 35mm lens on your eos there are some calculations you must use. When using a 35mm lens on the EOS 20D, 30D, 40D and 50D bodies, you must first calculate your focal leingth by 1.6 times. With this, your exposure changes as well.

The only EOS Digital SLR bodies that use a 35mm x 24mm CMOS sensor are the 1D and 5D. My wife uses a Tamron 18-200mm f3.5-5.6 lens on her 20D and loves it.

If this makes no difference, you may have a defective lens.
