Re: problem in booting then only mouse pointer display on...
Sounds like you messed it up well!
Suggest you cut your losses and just reinstall the system afresh but first try booting from the install DVD and going through the process until you reach the options to install or repair Select Repair and let the DVD try and fix it
With Acer I think you press F11 or F12 when booting to get the one time boot choice. When you have it just select the DVD player the disc is in and let it do its thing

If your system seems to be going through its normal boot routine, look at the screen from several different angles.
If you see 'ghosting' then it is likely the display backlight or the inverter for it that has failed.
If you have, or can borrow, a standalone monitor, plug it into the VGA port of your notebook.
If you still see nothing, it may be only that the external port must be turned on in your CMOS setup but the external monitor should at least show text during the boot routine.
Can you get it to boot using any of the options it gives other than boot normally? If the blue screen is caused by hardware then installing xp will still present the problem. If the blue screen is an operating system crash then using the recovery disk or doing a repair install will solve the boot problem.
If you still rather install xp then you need to go into BIOS and set 1st boot device as CD. To go into BIOS you will need to press F10 or F2 (usually) as displayed on the splash screen when you power on
