Question about Linksys BEFSR41 Cable/DSL Router W/4 Port Switch, Retail Box (DSLSBEFSR41)

1 Answer

I changed my password on my router to a very large password (168 characters). It accepted it. But when I went back in to test whether I could change it again, it would not let me in. It said it couldn't validate the user. I didn't want to reset the router and loose my config data. Is that what I have to do? What is the maximum character length for the router anyway? Thanks.

IF you don't know the password, can't duplicate it, your only option is to do a reset, at least you can get it back to square one.

Log into it via the hardwire connection (usually 192.168.1.1, but apparently someone has changed yours for whatever reason), enter the admin and password (it won't be the defaults, almost surely someone changed them when they changed the local network IP).

If you're wanting to set up a wireless password, go to the Wireless section, choose which Security you wish to use (WAP 2 Personal is often recommended), then you'll be prompted for the password.

Changed password now can"t access router

Your laptop still insists on using the old password that's why it can't connect. Go to Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center > Manage Wireless Networks. Select your router's SSID. Right click on it and change Properties > Security > Show characters. The old password that you forgot should appear. You may then change it to the latest one.

You may also click on the wifi signal icon on the lower right corner of your Taskbar, right click on the router's SSID, select Properties > Security > Show characters to reveal the old password you forgot and change it to the latest one.

Default admin password

  1. Enter your user name. If you didn't change the user name during installation, enter admin in theUser Name field. [Show Me]

  2. Enter the password you entered during installation and click OK. Additional characters will appear to be inserted as you enter your password. This is designed to hide the number of characters in your password.

    • Note: If you didn't change the default password when you set up your router, it may have been changed to your router's serial number to provide greater security. You can find your router's serial number on a label affixed to the bottom or back of your router.
    • Note: If you can't remember your user name or password, you must reset your Verizon MI424WR router to the default settings and reconfigure your home network.

A linksys router password should contain at least 8 different characters. You have to put one or more character to change or put your password as authentication. If you have a further query then let me know. Thanks for using FixYa.

I write my password as : tinyee_1964 but it says invalid

Your router most likely will not accept non alphanumeric characters such as the underscore "_" in the password. If your router is set to use WEP for its passwords you can only use characters (0-9 and A-F).

When you forget your Linksys router password, you will need to reset it back to the factory defaults. You can restore the router configuration to back to the factory by following the steps outlined below: 1. Hold in the reset button of the router for 30 seconds. 2. Unplug your power cord for 30 seconds 3. Plug back your power cord 4. Wait for a few seconds then release the reset button. NOTE: ¨ When holding in the reset button, make sure that you do not release it until you are sure that it has been compressed for at least 30 seconds or more. ¨ This procedure resets the router back to all its factory default settings thus apart from affecting your username and password, it will also affect your configuration and IP addressing. Once this is complete, you can now login and reconfigure your password. To do this: 1. Connect a PC to one of the Linksys router Ethernet ports 2. Open your web browser and go to the URL http://192.168.1.1. This will take you to a web page with a popup box which asks you to enter a username and password to login required to login to your router 3. On older LinkSys routers, the username is set to blank and the password is set to "admin" (without the quotes). On newer Linksys routers, both the default username and the default password are set to "admin". 4. Click on login. You have logged in to the Administrator account and are now able to access and change a number of configuration options for your router. 5. Click on management tab then change your administrator password to any password that you like. Remember to choose a strong password that others cannot guess but that will be easy enough for you to remember. 6. You can also choose to reconfigure other aspects of you Linksys router at this point.

There is a possibility that the user name and password that you are using is not used for the wireless connection of the network. If you have WPA enabled on your router, you need a password with a minimum number of 8 characters. If you enabled WEP on the router, it may need 10 or 26 characters depending on what type of encryption is enabled on the router.

You can check that using the Web interface of the router. Try these steps:

1. Connect a computer to the router wired then restart the computer.
2. Launch an internet browser and type in http://192.168.0.1 or if you changed the IP, use the changed address.
3. If it asks for a user name and password, set admin as the user name and password as the router password. If you have changed the password, use the new password.
4. Click on the wireless and check the security type. Make sure that the Mac filter is disabled and there you can find the network key set on your computer.
5. You can then use that key to connect your wireless computer
