Question about E-Machines eMachines Desktop PC
After a lot of use from my teenagers I want to wipe my pc and start again from scratch to get rid of some of the junk that I'm sure is hidden away in the hard drive. However I cannot find the re-installation disc (I don't even remember if it came with one).
The hard drive has a protected recovery partition and the main section has a format option when I right click on it.
Can I use the format option to wipe everything except the operating system and return it to factory settings or do I need a reinstallation disc?
If so where can I get a replacement? Its an emachine 5260 bought in 2005
DO NOT click on that Format option. It will wipe the entire recovery partition.
First look at all your programs to see if there is a recovery program. (Not System Restore.) It would probably be located in Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools.
If you do not see one, do a Restart on the computer and watch for a brief message as it begins to boot up. It may say something like "Press Delete for Setup. Press F10 for Recovery." It could be any "F" key, but you only have a few seconds to select it. If you miss the first time just wait and reboot again.
Normally you will have the option to do a full recovery (Everything wiped and restored as if you just purchased it.) or a selective recovery which will save your documents. If you don't have important files or if you can back them up on a flash drive, it would be better to do a full recovery.
Comment back if you are still having trouble.

if your computer has a microsoft logo sticker then you have a license of that OS. you have to inquire it to your vendor. if there is no MS Logo then probably it is pirated OS. then you have to provide installation disc to install it again.
But i think most of the branded machine has it own operating system and was enclosed it to the unit. "labeled sometimes recovery disk or system disk"
if you have one of this disk then insert it and reinstall the windows..note read carefully the onscreen instruction.

If your particular eMachines model didn't come with recovery media or you just misplaced the disc, you don't want to be caught without a means to restore the operating system.
It's all too easy to accidentally download a virus or experience any number of problems that make your computer unstable.
However, there is an option for restoring your computer without the original recovery disc by using the pre-installed recovery software.
Use an external memory device such as a DVD, flash drive or external hard drive to back up the data you need to save from your eMachines computer.
Any data that isn't saved to an external source will be erased when the computer is restored to factory settings.
Remove any discs that are in the optical drive and unplug the computer's peripheral devices, such as an Ethernet cable or scanner.
Do not disconnect the keyboard, mouse or monitor.
Click the Windows "Start" menu and choose "All Programs."
Navigate to "eMachines" and choose "eMachines Recovery Management." Click the "Restore" tab.
Click "Password Settings" if you have not already set a recovery password. Type a new password in the text box and click "OK." Click "Restore System to Factory Default."
Type the recovery password and click "OK." Click "Next" to wipe the eMachines computer's hard drive and begin the recovery process.
Select "Finish" and wait for the eMachines computer to restart.
Use the series of installation prompts that appear on the screen to create a new user account for your operating system, set the system date and time, and set up your internet settings.
hope this helps
