Question about Dell Inspiron B120 Notebook

Adapter going bad

I want to know why my second adapter (replacement) is going bad. It keeps coming out of the charger slot. When I touched it to see if it was bent, it was hot. This is the second time this has happened, and it's why I replaced the original adapter. The battery is barely charged. The tip is not bent, nor is the little polar tip in the slot. My computer is overheating too. It's almost like the tip is being melted and bent. Any solutions?

How do i fix an Acer aspire 4730z that will not charge the battery and has the charge light no longer comes on, is the motherboard bad?

Check power adapter's DC plug that connects into the laptop power socket with a multi-meter, the voltage should be slightly higher than the voltage that is printed on the label on the bottom of the adapter. If the voltage is zero or way below the voltage that is printed on the label then the power adapter is faulty and needs to be replaced.

My acer aspire 7720G shut down random

Wait a minute. What?

From what I read;
1) One wire of the AC adapter (Charger) is hot to the touch.
'.....when I touch the charge one part of the wire is very hot."

2) AC adapter checks out as far as voltage is concerned.
"I tested the charger voltage and everything is ok."

3) "Sometimes when I touch the charge appear the icon...Could it be the charger broken wire?"

Does this mean, "Sometimes when I touch the AC adapter (Charger), the battery icon appears."?

Battery is CHARGING icon?

Could it be a broken wire in the power cable TO charger?

Uh, yeah.

1) AC adapter NOT plugged into the DC Power Jack, plug the power cable of the AC adapter into power.

Multimeter set to DC Voltage, and proper scale, red Positive lead to harness wire that goes to DC Power Jack's center pin;

,black Negative lead of multimeter, to wire that goes to DC Power jack's inside cylindrical metal shell;

Now gently wiggle the cable from the AC adapter, TO the DC Power Jack of the laptop.

Do you get an intermittent reading?

2) Also, how did you replace the DC Power Jack? What steps did you take?

http://www.dcpowerjacks.net/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=1291

Did you reuse the wire harness, and solder it to the DC Power Jack?
Have a lot of experience in desoldering/soldering?
What tools did you use?

25 Watt soldering iron?
.025 or .030 rosin core solder?

Desoldering Tool, or Desoldering Braid? (Solder Wick)
Side Cutters instead, and slightly shortened the wires of the DC Power Jack's harness?
(Then tinned the wires, and soldered the wires of the DC Power Jack harness, to DC Power Jack?)

Damp sponge, and cleaned the well tinned No.2 chisel tip, of the soldering iron, frequently? Used rosin solder flux?

Center pin wire (Positive), of harness cable TO DC Power Jack, was soldered to the center pin of the DC Power Jack?

Negative wire of cable TO DC Power Jack, was soldered to the inside shell of the DC Power Jack?
(Cylindrical shell, inside the DC Power Jack, that surrounds the center pin of the jack)

Sure there are no cold solder joints?

Not trying to 'browbeat' you, just am curious.

1) IF you are SURE you have the polarity correct, of the wires in the harness cable, that goes to the DC Power Jack;

,and you are SURE there is no broken wire, in the cable from the AC adapter (Charger) TO the DC Power Jack;

,and you are sure you made good solder joints;

I suspect the power correcting chipset on the motherboard, to be bad, or perhaps a Diode.

One example of the chipset I am referring to. This one is used in a lot of laptops. May not be used in yours, but gives you something to refer to when looking for a bad chipset, in the power stage, on your motherboard,

https://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&q=cache:oER5NNz8cwcJ:www.fairchildsemi.com/ds/FD/FDS6675BZ.pdf+Fairchild+FDS6675BZ&hl=en&pid=bl&srcid=ADGEEShOhWPjm_M-ROHme4iEMrztCTOd-28jNiy1hVLQQh_VOyv8zcXEVDB_iTQA6MuZO88UmRkDgjyW9j4CP2aIJ-4DS-h6JNM3lvxldeApQeecmz_DADCw1s7tmNLxfPknqX14SZP6&sig=AHIEtbS_rYUAeo_8rB9YHkW05ZjLqeH4Jg

Usually when bad the top of the chipset will be blackened, or bubbled.
A Diode is a one way valve for electricity. When they go bad it is visually obvious.

While charging my laptop , mouse pointer cant work and while it. why?

Hi avinamit,

I saw your question and I think I can help you with your concern.

you mentioned that when you connect your charger/Adaptor tp you laptop that the touchpad will not respond or move, I believe that your machine may be experiencing a small amount of ground from the adaptor to the touchpad, here is what we need to do,

  • First we need to turn your Laptop OFF
  • Once turned Off, remove the battery from your Laptop and unhook/remove the AC adapter/Charger as well.
  • Once the Battery and the Adapter is remove from the system, press and hold down the power button for 10-15 seconds this will drain any power left in the system, by doing this we will be starting the machine up with a new set of power coming from the Charger.
  • Once the power is drained is done connect the Adapter back to the machine and the battery try to power your system ON and check if the touch pad will work now with the adapter connected to your Laptop.
this may help you with your concern about the touch pad not responding when the charger is conencted, but still if the issue still exists then most probably the machine is grounded from the charger to the motherboard thus causing malfunction to some of your system devices.

thanks I hope this helps.

My dell inspirion ac charger will keep computer running but will not charge my battery. A pop up will inform me that the system doesnt recognize the charger.

it could be a couple things: Are you using the standard 90 Watt ac adapter, or the Travel auto/Air adapter. The travel adapter is only 65 watts can will charge the battery
If using the standard ac adapter, see if you can try another Dell D series adapter and see if you get the same error.
If same with another adapter, the issue is the charging circuit. If another adapter works, then replace the adapter.
If the charging circuit is bad, it will be the chargerboard or if intergrated, the motherboard

My toshiba satellite L300 has no power

Please follow these steps VERY CAREFULLY:

1) Unplug the notebook from the ac adapter (charger power cord)

2) Take off the battery pack on the notebook

3) Once the ac adapter and battery is off the notebook, hold down the power button for 15 seconds

4) After 15 seconds, let go of the power button

5) Now plug in the AC ADAPTER (OR CHARGER POWER CORD) ONLY (DO NOT PUT BACK THE BATTERY PACK)

6) Now press the power button once.

7) If the unit boots, the unit suffered a slight surge

8) If the unit does not boot and remains dead, the unit suffered a severe surge and may be burned out and needs replacing

I hope this helps and let me know how it goes afterwards

I keep the ac adaper in but the charger doesnt

you can see the problem if the battery in not charging or not loading some current. you can do this by unplugging the adapter on the outlet. if the unit turned off then the battery is defective. replace it. now if the problem is the adapter, you can see by removing the battery then plug the adapter to the unit and in the outlet. if the unit didn't turn on, the the adapter is defective. replace it.

It turns on for a few seconds then shuts off

Hi,
Since you have already replaced the ac adapter. The problem is still there. the most likely cause of the failure is bad motherboard. Remove the battery from the laptop and disconnect the ac adapter . Press the power button for 10 seconds. Reconnect the ac adapter and try powering on the system. If the same doesnot work

My dell inspiron600m does not even come on at

It sounds like the power adapter/charger has gone bad. If the adapter/charger is bad, then 2 things will happen.
1. The battery will not be charged.
2. the system will not be operable from the adapter.

If your adapter is not able to charge the battery or operate the device, then the battery is likely dead, which means youd have no power from the battery, and youd have no power from the adapter, and no power from the battery or adapter means it wont come on. I suggest taking that machine to a shop and having the adapter checked, as well as trying a new adapter.

Can't determine if battery is dead or charger.....

Take the battery out and just hook up the charger to the laptop and see if it turns on. If it does then your charger is good and the battery is bad.

If you hook up the ac adaptor only and it doesn't turn on the laptop then that means either the motherboard or the ac adapter is bad.

See if the AC Adapter has a green light on it, if it does see if it comes on when you plug it into the outlet, if it turns on then the ac adapter is good and the motherboard is bad.

AC adapter not recognized--battery will not charge.

there's only 2 possible issue with this problem and 2 solution.

Solution 1 update the BIOS.

(for DELL system's it will require that the battery still has at least 10% charge meaning that this solution is not going to be possible unless you have another battery that is currently charged. if so go here ) the BIOS version there is A16, if you have a different version you can update it.

Solution 2 replace the motherboard

if the problem still persist after going thru solution 1 there's only one step you need to take, you'll have to replace the motherboard for this type of problem. I hope you still have warranty for this computer, you can either have it shipped at the DEPOT or have an onsite come out to replace it.

hope that helps.

hit me back on the results.
