Bonjour,
Trouble comes in 3's
If there is never any water in the drip pan under the refrigerator it is not defrosting and the evaporator drain line may be stopped up. Side by Side refrigerators cool the freezer first and send a small amount of cold air to the refrigerator side. To start defrost the defrost timer stops the compressor and all fans. Next it turns on the defrost heater. This melts the ice/frost off the freezer coils. The water drips down the drain line to the drain pan under the unit. If the defrost heater raises the temperature too high the defrost termination thermostat turns the heaters off. When the defrost timer finishes it turns off the heaters and turns the compressor and fans back on. If the drain line clogs with food the water does not drain out and when the compressor starts again the water freezes. If this keeps happening the ice gets higher and bigger until it clogs the coils and the freezer does not get cold. If the defrost termination thermostat turns off the defrost heaters too soon all the frost is not melted from the coils. And the coils soon clog and the freezer gets too warm. No defrost usually means either a bad defrost timer, a clogged drain line, a bad defrost termination thermostat or some combination of the three.
If the drain line is not stopped up you can try this.
Remove all food from freezer and refrigerator, open the doors and unplug the cord. Wait 30 hours for all the frost to melt.
Keep the doors open and the cord unplugged the whole time. Empty the drain pan to keep it from over flowing. After 30 hours plug it back in and wait for 1/2 cup of water to turn to ice in the freezer. Then you can put the food back in. The problem can return if the unit is not defrosting. Or you can call a service technician.

SOURCE: defrost side by side fridge

no you can not. there are no separate defrost control for freezer and fridge. the evaporator is located in the freezer section and it is supposed to defrost automatically. what is the problem in the first place?

Its defrost problem.--------- When you open the freezer door, then ice starts getting defrosted, because outside temperature is warm and due to that inside ice gets bit melted.--------- -------------- The working procedure of this unit is as follows: --- The compressor starts then it cools the freezer section. When the freezer reaches its cooling level the defrost cycle starts functioning. In this cycle the fan in the freezer section starts running and the cool air in the freezer section is passed to the fridge section and the fridge section gets cold. The air from freezer to refrigerator passes from the section, in that section the damper is located. ----------- The damper is operated by a motor. Its a complete damper assembly with motor included in it.--The damper has door.Which closes and open with the help of motor. In your case the damper door is blocked by ice, because your refrigerator is not defrosting. But when you open the freezer door, the inside ice gets bit warm and it starts melting and this lets the fridge section get cool.------------------- In this case you will have to manually defrost the ice and inspect, if the problem solves. For manual defrost procedure, click the link below:-------- Click this below for more detail:--- http://technoanswers.blogspot.com/2011/06/refrigerator-is-not-cooling-properly.html ----------- This will help.Thanks.Helpmech.

My refrigerator side is not cooling well. I see ice behind the fan unit when I take out the veggie drawers at bottom. Also fan on fridge side is making lots of noise. Noise stops when I open the door and...

.When you open the door freezer door will get stopped and so, no sound. It will work only when door is closed. Fan sound comes due to malfunction of defrost. If defrost does in right time it won't happens. Unplug and let fridge get defrost all icing. After 3 to 4 hrs, start run again, and set temp @ 5degree freezer. It will start cooling fridge compartment also. But, this is a temerory solution. To solve permanently, find out why defrost not functioned properly?
Follow this steps.
Check defrost timer working which is back of the refrigerator down corner. By with small tip screw driver in some models located in the ceiling of the fresh foodsection or behind the cold control cover. In the defrost timer, slowly turn the screw like wheel in the middle of the defrost timer withstraight screwdriver until the fridge shuts off. Now it's in defrost. If thedefrost heater(s) starts, replace the defrost timer and defrost thermostat. Ifthe heater(s) does not start, unplug wire cord to check ohm test for continuityof heater. If continuity is there, plug cord wire which gives power 120volts(check specification) to heater. If heater no starts, bypass defrost thermostatby join the 2 wires in the defrost thermostat. If the heater now comes on,replace the defrost timer and defrost thermostat. If the heater itself is bad, replace it. Thanks and hope helpful.

Not only will the fridge side not cool properly, now the door won't stay shut. Temp in fridge side stays 20 degrees warmewr than what panel says.what a pos.

Fridge problem- How to check everything http://www.acmehowto.com/howto/appliance/refrigerator/refrigerator.php
The fridge gets its cold air from the freezer through a vent(damper) between the freezer and fridge. The fan in the freezer blows air through it. There is a flap you adjust with the fridge temp. control. Make sure it's opening and closing when you adjust the fridge temp .
OR
.
If the evaporator coils behind the back panel of the freezer are icing up because of auto defrost failure that will stop the circulation of cold air and eventually affect the freezer too.

check defrost timer, defrost heater, defrost thermostat. In most newer models the timer has been replaced by an electronic control board. If the heater and thermostat are ok it’ll be the control.

You can turn the defrost timer till it clicks and everything shuts down. The heater should now come on. If it does, replace the timer. If it doesn't, check the heater and defrost thermostat. Turn the timer again till everything starts back up to end the defrost cycle.

Your evaporator coils frost up in normal use and every eight hours or so the entire unit shuts down and the defrost heater comes on to melt the frost. This cycle last about 20 minutes. The melted frost drips into a drain pan and through a drain tube to the drain tray under the freezer/refrigerator where it's evaporated by the condenser fan.

Door problem-The lower hinge on each door may have a door closing cam. It raises the door up ¼ inch when opening and this assist in closing the door. If it’s wore out and doesn’t work the door may not seal and the gasket can be damaged. Watch the operation of the door to see if it rises up when opened.

Door was left open. Frost in the back. Outside sides very warm. Doesn't sound like it's 'running.'

Move your food to another fridge. Shut your fridge off and manually defrost it. This used to be a farily common practice. Just leave the door(s) open, and let'er melt. You can have a fan blow in it (don't put the fan in the fridge). Thaw completely, and try again. It may have tripped on a thermal overload, so the compressor may have shut down. It may restart after it has cooled.

Fridge not getting cold

This is a frost free frige, so if you see frost, that is the problem. Check the defrost heater, defrost limit and defrost timer/board. You can get by for a while by manually defrosting the fridge. Turn it off, unload the food, and leave the freezer door open for 24-36 hours.

Maytag MSD2651HES fridge not cooling freezer works find

Sounds like a defrost problem. Check to see if there is any frost buildup in the back wall of the freezer. If so, it is not defrosting as it should.
  • possible causes:
  1. bad defrost timer
  2. bad defrost heater (in freezer)
  3. bad thermo switch in freezer
If you don’t know what these are then unplug the machine and let the ice melt in the freezer overnight with the door open. Then try it the next day, if is cooling fine then you need to have a service person replace one of the above items.
