What brand and model router do you have? They don't all use 192.168.1.1 as the address.

You have to log into the router to set that up, all manufacturers use different addresses to log into their router and without knowing the Make and model of your router I cannot help you.
The router should have come with a quick connect guide and a manually to walk you through the process, But you can find the address and default log-in information on the manufacturers website.
You also have to be hardwired to the router to set it up especially if it is a new one, the newer routers do not allow you to log into them for setup using wireless unless you changed that the first time it was setup. This is to prevent other users from remotely changing your wireless settings.

I just recently had an RCA dcm425 modem installed today. I, stupidly, did not check the Internet connection before the installation guy left. Now, the cable activity light is flashing and the cable link...

it is common for the network port to fail on the DCM425s. a couple of things to try...1. a new network cabe2. hold the reset for 30 seconds (small hole on the back)3. try using the usb connection (this will not allow for a router connection and XP should give you a genaric driver so that you can see if the modem is working other than the network port)
if all else fails, it would probably be easier to take the modem into the local office and ask for an exchange. trust me, i am a service tech for a cable company and it is a lot easier to take the modem in for an exchange than arguing with some one on the phone who has no clue how to trouble shoot a modem and then waiting for another incompetent tech (if he didn't check to verify that it was working he was incompetent) back out to screw it up again. also ask if they have any motorola modems... there more reliable.

Red power light means that the router won't work anymore?

The red light that you have there is a sign that router is having some hardware failure on it, what we can try here is to do a reset on it and see if that corrects the problem.

To reset it look for a small reset button on the router and then use a pen or paper clip then press and hold it for 30 seconds while power is ON then power off and power back on see if that corrects the issue. But if still the same you now need a new router if its still under warranty have it replace.

Hi, I want to set up my router to my DCM425 modem (from Time Warner). So far I cannot access the internet on my laptop. I get internet fine when the modem is directly plugged into my laptop, and I can also...

1) Make sure the cable is plugged into the Internet port (or whatever the appropriate port is, since you didn't specify exactly which router).

2) At your router's configuration page, make sure DHCP (Automatic) is selected.

3) After connecting to the router, if it still does not work, open up the command window by going to the search box in the Start Menu or click Run... and type "cmd".

4) Type "ipconfig /release". Wait until this is finished.

5) Type "ipconfig /renew". Wait until this is finished.
This should have given you an IP Address.

6) Try to connect to a website.

My modem is hooked up to a netgear wireless router, my internet was working before but isn,t now. How can I get it to work again? It has been reset, and unplugged.

unplug the modem and the router wait 2 mins. Plug the modem in first and wait till all of the lights are solid on the modem then plug the router in. If you reset the router to the factory state chances are you are going to have to set up the routers wizard again the routers ip is 192.168.1.1 usually the default login is admin for the user and password for the password

It doesn't matter which port your PC is plugged into, the router will take care of that. You need to turn the wireless system on. You do this from inside the routers configuration pages which you access through your browser. Being a 2wire router, you may have to use the software on the 2wire website. Alternatively, you can try entering ip addresses into the browser address window. Try 198.162.1.1 or 198.162.0.1 etc
Once you access the router, turn wireless on and activate the security. Enter a code key and write it down as you will need to enter the same code into every PC or laptop that you wish to use the wireless connection. Setting up the wireless connection on your laptop is easy, just tell the laptop to search for available networks and when it finds the 2wire router, tell it to connect. It will then ask for the code key. Enter it and all should be well.

The internet connection is not working and it has worked before. The internet only works when it is connected directly to the comcast motorola modem.

I'm guessing by you incomplete statement that the wireless portion of your internet is not working? How many computers? Running a router wirelessly to them? If so, from the connected computer open a browser window and type in 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 and check settings, especially security. If you can't access router do a hard reset putting it back to factory settings, then try again - when asked for username leave blank and enter default password for router if you never set one up. password is in the user's manual. might also try new drivers or firmware from manufacturer's website. user's manual is there too. hope this helped. wasn't exactly sure what your specific problem was...

Replace netgear CG814WG with WGR614 Possibile???

CG814 and WGR614 both are wireless modem, with 4 LAN port.
the difference is CG814 use so call "stateful" packet inspection, where WGR614 is using NAT, which is less secured, and easily attacked.
both have spam filer, and you can set restriction as to what website or content of the website.
CG814 should cost more than the WGR814. you should ask the resaller for the difference.
