Since you do not have the original OS CD's you will need to obtain a replacement copy of the OS from Apple, there are some corrupted files within the system and it will need to be reloaded.

Reloading the OS should not affect any of your data files, however be sure to read the screen prompts so that you do accidentally tell the OS to reformat your HDD. Once you have restored your OS files and get the system running again, you WILL need to reinstall your application software, so if you had say MS Office for Mac installed, you will have to reinstall it for it to work again.

Unfortunately, this is your ONLY solution if you want to recover your personal data from the system.

Hope that this helps you out. If you can, see if there is a Mac Users Group in the city you live in and try to borrow a copy of the OS from someone to reinstall it.

Cheers,

Keith

Macbook stuck on load up screen

When you say "load up screen", I assume you mean the Apple boot screen (it has the apple on a gray background).

You might try resetting the PRAM on the macbook.
You can do this by pressing and holding the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.

So, turn the macbook completely off. Turn it on and immediately press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys until the computer reboots and chimes. Once it chimes, release the keys. Your system should boot normally.

Macbook not starting up past the grey screen with spinning wheel. started in command v and have black screen with lots of white writing

Seems like a hard drive problem. You may need data recovery first and then replace the hard disk. Good luck.

You will need to put in the Mac install DVD, once that loads up on your computer on the main bar go to utilities and then disk utility. from there click repair disk. If this fails you will have to reformat your disk and install a clean version of Mac.

Booting up in safe mode will allow you to open disk utility (Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility) and repair permissions / repair disk from there

To start up into Safe Mode (to Safe Boot), do this:

  1. Be sure your Mac is shut down.
  2. Press the power button.
  3. Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
  4. Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).

CANNOT LOAD MACBOOK. TAKES FOREVER TO GET PAST THE APPLE LOGO, THEN WON'T EVEN GET TO THE POINT WHERE IT ASKS FOR PASSWORD

Insert your Leopard OS disc and startup your mac while holding down the C key to have it startup using the OS on the disk. When it's loaded, DONT do the install, but go to the desktop menu and launch Disk Utilities and do a disk repair and permissions repair... you should see a good improvement on startup

Completely white/gray screen

First try this: shut it down, disconnect the power cord, pull out the battery, then hold the power button for a full 10 seconds. Reinstall the battery, reattach the power cord, turn it back on.
Still doing it? Put the reboot disk that your Mac came with, or the disk to the version of Mac OS X that you're running.
To start from disk hold "C" as your Mac is first turning on from a complete shutdown.

Macbook start up problems

We'll that happened to me also.. i researched and found if you goto apple.com and look up support for macbook. Look for .pdf macbook repair manuel. There you'll get start up procedures. turn off power. Then load start disk, hold down "alt/opt" button and then turn power on. Wait for a min or two and then you'll see your hard drive and start disk to choose from. Choose start disk and click enter. Be sure your disk isn't scratched.. i had that problem. Then wait... it takes awhile so be patient. You'll get the whole set up again. DONT ERASE YOUR PRIOR DISK!!! Thats where i screwed up! So.... you should be able to get what you want .. if not.. its a new hard drive you'll need to buy... i'm heading to Best Buy and the Geek Squad for my help!

good luck!
