Your printer drivers may have been corrupted. If you have the installation cd just delete the printer and install again. If you don't have the cd you can download the drivers for your OS version from the manufacturer's site.

Hi, I bought a HP Pavilion dm4 two months ago and it seems that it doesn't contain a number lock key. I was wondering if there is a way to insert special characters without going to symbols and copy...

If you were to click on start then All programmes. Select Accessories and then character map.
Select a font and then the code you require.
I find since WinXP Alt0189 no longer works properly and use the character map instead.
Hope that helps.

I sometimes accidentally switch the keyboard to characters other than standard English. I don't even know how I do this. How do I switch back to the standard keyboard? If I switch the computer off, then...

There should be a sequence that you need to press to change it from one type of keyboard characters to another. Look for a key that has the symbol of a keyboard on it. Most likely this is the key that is causing you the problems. Typically you have to press the Function key that is near the space bar as well as the key with the symbol on it to change it from one character set to the other. Evey laptop keyboard is alittle different than the next when it comes to which keys are "functions keys", so you will have to examine your keyboard to find the correct key on you laptop.

How do i make a solid star symbol on my keyboard?

Windows has many characters available through the use of alt-codes. This site has information on how to use them. I'm not sure what kind of a symbol you are wanting to make, though, so this might not be exactly what you're looking for. If you are needing a symbol when using a program like Word, you can switch to a different font (like Wingdings or Webdings) and insert characters from that set.

Hope this helps you. Thanks for using Fixya!

Don't know how to type the third symbol on a keyboard key e.g. the little subtraction symbol on the right of the colon/semicolon is what I'm going for

Hello there brennerc.

Here's your GEEK-steer ...

Based on your description I'm not sure which character that is. Are you sure it's located on a standard keyboard? If not, it's what's known as an "extended" character, with which you'll need your Windows "Character Map" accessory to help you locate.

[Start > Accessories > System Tools > Character Map]
... or ...
[Start > Run... > type "charmap.exe" (without quotes), then Enter]

TIPS:
  • Clicking on any character's (square) will initiate a perpetually zoomed popup to help you see it better.
  • Once you find desired character, double-click (or select button) it to place it into the "characters to copy" field, where you can then "copy" (button) it, and then paste wherever desired.
Good luck, and thanks in advance for posting back ...

  • if you have any further questions,
  • to provide clarification or feedback.

Cannot get backslash (\) character to display

To get a backslash, you need to print the upper ascii character 92 (decimal). On most machines you can get upper ascii characters by holding down the Alt key and typing the decimal value on the numeric keypad. On the little IBM machine I'm typing this on, there is no numeric keypad, but if I switch on numlock (by doing shift-scroll-lock) the j-k-l keys become 1-2-3 etc. Now id I hold down Alt and type 92 (i.e.keys 9-k), this is what I get: \ Howzzat?.
