Sigma Lens Problems

I have a Sigma 28-70mm f2.8 lens. I bought it used. When I put it on my Canon xsi it takes beautiful shots for about 20-25 minutes then I get a message on the screen of the camera that says, "Err 01 Communications between the camera a lens is faulty. Clean the lens contacts. When I turn the camera off and back on again I find it took the picture but gives me the message. I took it to a camera repair shop. Got it back home, worked for about 30 minutes, started doing it again. I'm wondering if it can be fixed. I don't want to spend any more money on it if it can't. Any suggestion?

I've already read the posts at sportshooter. I really don't understand all that they are talking about. I'll go ahead and leave the fixing up to the repairman. I guess what I want to know is if this a common problem with Sigma lenses on Canon cameras and if this is a problem that will demand that I discard it and get another lens? Should I keep attempting to fix it or move on?

I think I will move on. I just wanted to hear it from someone who isn't trying to sell the repair to me. Thanks.

The error can be fixed by taking apart the lens assembly and cleaning the contacts.

Take the camera back to the repair shop, complain, and get the job done properly, if the camera did not receive any shock after the repair, then you are entitled to a proper repair.

Some user also has the same problem that you have and they end up changing the reaplacing the lens eventhough there's really no clear issue about this two..I suggest you go ahead and replace it so you can move on...

I suggests you to just move on. Lens error is definitely the hardest part to fix. It can be replaced but it will fail again for short period of time due to compatibility issue.

Hi,

The only solution to this problem is to
remove the lens, reattach it, and check to see if the error message reappears. If you see the error code again, you’ll need to clean the lens contact.

If you still face the problem then you will have to get it repaired as the fault is with lens mechanism.

Does my Sigma 28-105 mm Aspherical for film camera work on my Canon 5D Mark III?

If the Sigma lens mount is a Canon FD fitting then you can get an adapter FD to EF that will allow you to use the old lens in manual mode. If your camera isn't designed to take EF-s lenses then they will not fit on the camera. My EF-s lenses will not fit on my 6D.

From working with third party lenses in the past what I've found is that Canon doesn't give up the "chip" technology so the older lens can not talk to the newer cameras. I suspect that Canon does this to promote their lenses over the competition. You might be able to send the lens to Sigma and have them re-chip it and have a great lens again.

Yes, if you get one with a Canon mount. Sigma makes their lenses available with a variety of mounts; a lens with a Nikon mount, for example, will not fit on a Canon camera.

To NOT get that error you need to use in AV mode. It's the only way that old Sigmas work with the new Canons. It's an aperture bug that old Sigma lens have and some the only way to fix it is to rechip it. The problem is that Sigma no longer rechips the lens.
